Bolingbrook, Illinois is known for its firearms manufacturing and trade. The city was founded by Dan Boren in 1837 as a small town on the north side of Chicago. In 1851, Bolingbrook became the seat of Kane County. During World War II, it was one of the primary sites for production of American military munitions. From 1925 until his death in 1970, Harry Colt left nearly all ownership and management of his company to his son Wesley Colt Jr., who continued operations under different names until 1984. In honor of Harry and Wesley Colt Jr.'s contributions to firearm sales and culture in Bolingbrook, the City Council voted in 2003 to rename Washington Street in their honor (though this change has not yet taken effect). The first residents of what would become Bolingbrook were landowning farmers from northeastern England who arrived in 1814 during the wave of immigration that followed Napoleon's invasion of Europe. They named their new community after John Bolinger, a Connecticut Senator and member of President James K. Polk's cabinet who had helped to promote American independence during the War for Independence. The town's first public building was a log cabin built by George Hinton on his farm near present day Washington Boulevard and La Grange Road in 1835. In 1839, resident Jonathan Whitacre erected a stone cottage on what would become Park Avenue NW., which served as the town hall until it burned down in 1865 while undergoing reconstruction following disasters such as Native American raids and economic depression following Slavery's abolition throughout much of North America A frame jail was constructed by Levi Coffin opposite High Street (now Green Street) about 1850-1851 to serve as an interim storage facility for criminals awaiting trial before courts located elsewhere within Cook County until that time In 1855-56, lumber worker John Giannini opened what became known as Giannini’s Store on Park Avenue NW., which became one of Illinois' leading commercial institutions through its many years of success despite occasional financial setbacks due to competition from larger stores operated by local merchants like David Dixon Giannini who also ran businesses adjacent to Piannerie’s grocery store just east off Northwestern Expressway now I-90 exit 339 . When Joliet began annexing former French villages along Lake Michigan ilk via Proposition 2 (1871), including parts of Aurora northward into Joliet Township, then all but three blocks east along Present Highway including all or most current buildings southward including Giannini’s Store disappeared from history leaving only those blocks west along I-90 between Joliet Rd./present highway/Lake Michigan Blvd./exact location where Piannerie’s currently stands today
