Bolingbrook is an unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois, United States. It was established in 1881 as a small farming community near the confluence of the Kankakee and Chicago Rivers. The Bolingbrook Cement Company was founded in 1904 and became one of the largest cement companies in the world. In 1951, Bolingbrook voters passed a referendum to annex part of neighboring Decatur Township. The annexation created an unofficial city, but it has no legal status. The first gun ever manufactured in Bolingbrook was a muzzleloader by Hurd & Sons Manufacturing Company on October 14, 1885. A shotgun by Jno. Wessels & Sons Manufacturing Company followed on December 2, 1886. There were only a few shotguns made in Bolingbrook before World War I because of prohibition laws that applied to all firearms including muzzleloaders and shotguns not registered with the government or possessing any ammo other than shot shells or handguns without permits from authorities. Bolingbrook saw its first homicide on November 6, 1902 when John Fenton killed his stepfather with a shotgun at their farm house located near what is now Park Boulevard and Arkansas Avenue. Bolingbrook, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 64,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Bolingbrook is located on the north side of Chicago and is bordered by the communities of Westmont to the east and Old Town to the west. The community was founded in 1847 as a town on a small tract of land that had been deeded to John S. Cullerton by his father-in-law, Daniel Webster. The first post office was established in 1849 and named for John S. Bolingbroke, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke (1784-1848), an English statesman who served as Undersecretary of State in Lord Aberdeen's coalition government during the 1830s through 1840s. In 1856, Bolingbrook became one of only four towns in Cook County to be incorporated under a new charter granted by Governor Samuel J. Tilden; it remains an unincorporated community today. In 1886, Bolingbrook became home to what would later become known as Northwestern University; it opened its doors with just 12 students and three staff members after being founded by six men led by Dr. George Washington Goodwin (1837-1915). Northwestern's first president, David Starr Jordan (1904-1969), also gave birth to Bolingbrook when he purchased 160 acres here from Alfred Payson Wright for $350 cash plus $5 per acre for 25 years; this land now forms part of Northwestern's Olmsted Campus . Today there are over 20,000 students from all 50 U.S. states and more than 100 countries studying at Northern Illinois University . In 1950, when African Americans made up just 8 percent of the community's population , they started buying property here en masse ; within 10 years they had increased their share to 24 percent . Bolingbrook was founded in 1871 by George Washington Boling and his wife Lucy as a small community on the edge of present-day Bolingbrook Township on the Northeast Side of Chicago. The first post office opened in 1872. In 1886, Bolingbrook became a town and then an incorporated village; it was made an unincorporated village again in 1951. The city's name comes from boling wood which is found near where it was founded. The city is located on a large tract of rolling farmland that has been farmsteads for centuries, but has only recently become developed as an urban center due to its proximity to both downtown Chicago and various industrial areas within walking distance. The city is bounded by Will County to the north, Lake Michigan to the east, Racine County to the south, and Cook County to the west. Bolingbrook's history can be traced back to 1871 when George Washington Boling and his wife Lucy founded what would become known as Bolingbrook with their home on land they had acquired along the banks of La Salle River near what is now Melrose Park. At that time there were no towns or villages within Cook County and only two small villages - Holyoke and Westchester - were located within Will County next door to each other. By 1886, Bolingbrook had grown into one of Cook County's largest towns with a population of over 5,000 people living primarily in residential neighborhoods scattered throughout central Bollingen Brook Township (later renamed North Hennepin). This growth came about because new transportation methods such as streetcars made traveling between cities much easier and allowed residents who lived close together access to services unavailable before or even during their childhoods such as schools, libraries, grocery stores etc., that today make up most aspects of suburban life outside of larger cities like Chicago or Detroit.
