Burr Ridge is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Burr Ridge post office was established in 1872, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1967. The first settler in Burr Ridge was John Burr, who came to the area from Kentucky around 1837. He built a cabin on the present-day site of Burr Ridge Village in 1840. In 1849, Andrew Jarratt founded Jacksonville Landing on his farm near what is now Burlington Township, about three miles east of Burr Ridge. Jarratt's landing served as a stop for travelers on their way north to the manufacturing cities of Chicago and Gary. In 1852, Samuel Butterfield built a gristmill on the south side of Lake Michigan just east of where today's Butler Road intersects Interstate 90. Butterfield became one of the early settlers in Kane County and entrepreneurs helped build what would become Burr Ridge into an agricultural community with large scale industry beginning around 1870-75 when Captain George Stephenson opened Stevenson’s Mill & Woolen Mills at what is now known as North Aurora Boulevard and Higgins Road (now William McKinley Drive). Stephenson’s mill produced flannel cloth for Western Union Telegraph Company customers throughout Northwestern America before closing its doors for good in 1925; however, parts remain extant today as Old Stevenson Way State Historic Site located within walking distance of Burr Ridge Village green mall parking lot off Higgins Road across from North Aurora Boulevard). Captain George Stephenson also began production at his mill which resulted in creation of some 2 million yards worth of fabric each week by 1880! By 1890 Bridgeport had supplanted Jacksonville Landing as India Point during that year’s Great Lakes fairgrounds season due to increased competition from larger mills located along Indiana Avenue including McCormick Place–Chicago (@northwest corner then Snelling Avenue), Singer Sewing Machine Factory (@southwest corner then Dearborn Street) and others that were opening up throughout Cook County during this time period! Kane County acquired land west of I-90 between Burlington Township and Northwest Side giving birth to Burr ridge today while Kane county inland continued acquiring more land through annexations culminating with all but one township (Butterfield Township) being annexed by Kane County by 1895 becoming known as “the burr ridge belt”! Today much evidence remains associated with these early times including small villages dotting agricultural landscapes still standing centuries after they were abandoned or destroyed by natural disasters such as floods or fires! Although many have disappeared since incorporation into municipalities most notably those mentioned previously Iroquois Heights/Ft Wayne Park has been preserved via state funding through efforts led by Mayor Steve Adair!).
