The first settlers to what is now Calumet City were the Potawatomi people who arrived there in 1837. They were followed by other Native American groups such as the Shawnee and Kickapoo. The Potawatomi built their first homes near the current site of downtown Calumet City around 1795. By 1837, most of what is now Calumet City had been developed and it was renamed for the river that ran through it- La Salle County's namesake river, which also served as its primary trade route into Chicago from the east. The early years of this town were difficult due to various factors including disease, warfare with neighboring towns, economic competition with nearby villages and cities, and natural disasters like wild fires that destroyed many homes and killed many people. However, despite these challenges, La Salle County's first mayor (and future governor) Isaac Ladd decided to make this humble town his home in 1837 because he felt it would be an important stop on his journey to build a new government center for Illinois. Despite some initial struggles (such as low population density), La Salle County continued to grow rapidly due to new transportation connections made available by railroads coming through Illinois via Chicago; this growth led to increased business opportunities for businessesmen like Ladd who saw opportunity where others saw only trouble. In fact, during his time as mayor/governor (1840-1845), he enacted several landmark laws including one that reorganized local government so that all village members could vote together instead of being split up into individual elections each year; another major accomplishment during his term was helping create a water system for La Salle County which improved agricultural productivity while reducing flooding caused by heavy rainsstorms seasonally throughout the area. During World War II both America and Europe faced increasing military threats from Nazi Germany; accordingly, much effort went into creating munitions plants within Illinois' borders in order generate enough revenue to finance defense spending even though taxes didn't go up significantly during wartime times thanks mainly to high levels of social welfare programs funded out of general tax revenues which helped maintain stable incomes across all segments of society despite tough economic times nationwide throughout much of 1944-1945 - something that has never been duplicated since then! After World War II ended there were efforts underway within both America and Europe toward reconciliation following WWII; unfortunately though no agreements were reached until later when leaders from both sides convened at Madrid Peace Conference under Ulysses S Grant III in 1945 which resulted in General Dwight D Eisenhower becoming president over Harry Truman - something we can only imagine would have been far more smooth if those darn Germans hadn't shown up again just two years later... Anyway backtracking another few months here: after leaving office as president (1946-1948), Ike ventured back into politics becomingsecretaryofstateunder John F Kennedy before retiring at age 79 effective December 12th of that year having accomplished more than any other Ulysses S Grant ever did! The city of Calumet City was founded in 1847 by George and Nancy (Lambert) Dixon, who named the settlement after their home town of Carleton, Ontario. The first store in Calumet City was built on the corner of Main and State Streets. In 1865, the first post office in Calumet City was established. By 1870, there were six businesses in the city. In 1881, a cotton gin was built in downtown Calumet City and became one of the leading sources for cotton production in Illinois. The population ofCalumet City grew gradually from its initial population of around 100 residents to over 1,000 by 1900. During World War II, many citizens served in the military or had wartime jobs within the local economy. In 1947, a new high school was built and named after General Dwight Eisenhower. In 1959, a tornado touched down near downtown Calumet City; it destroyed several homes and injured at least 20 people before dissipating moments later. The tornado has been mentioned as one of the most severe Tornadoes that have struck Illinois since records began being kept about sixty years ago
