The first people to live in what is now Calumet City were Algonquian-speaking Potawatomi Native Americans who may have come from upriver along the Calumet River. The first Europeans to settle here were Frenchmen who founded a fur trading post near present-day Wicker Park in 1812. In 1835, General James K. Polk moved his army westward from Springfield into what is now Cook County and established Fort Dearborn on the banks of the Chicago River at what is now West Side Highway (41st Street). At this location General Polk encountered local Native American nations led by Chief Loyola and Captain David Wilcox, who had arrived from Indiana with an expedition earlier that year seeking to purchase land grants from these tribes for white settlement. By 1836, most of Ottawa Township had been bought by Major John Davenport and his brother Isaac Davenport Jr., brothersinlaw of General Polk, for $2,500; Calumet City became part of their new township as well. In 1839–40 William Hennepin built a dock on Michigan Avenue just north of downtown to bring goods downriver to be traded with Indians and European settlers; he named it Hennepin's Landing after himself and afterward Calumet City became known as Hennepin's Landing until 1795 when it reverted back to its original name – Calumet City proper – following European settlement thereof without giving any land away to anyone. The first settler here was Nicholas Hervey whose house still stands today on State Street between Hoyt Street (now Clark) and Randolph Road (now Harrison Rd.). A few years later another pioneer named John Lewis purchased some property northeast of town site for $1,000; Lewis built a store there which continued operation until 1865 when it burned down due to fire caused by lightning striking an oil lamp stand next door! Other early businesses include Biddle & Son grocery store which opened in 1856 and closed about 1915; Jarry&Snyder Hardware Store which opened in 1861 but closed about 1925; Kahn Bros., Tailors shop which opened May 1 1860TH but closed about 1928 according to fabric records kept at that time by Arthur Fenton Kahn Jr.; Easley Woolen Mills which operated outof their building on Dearborn St until 1916 when they moved across Center Street into what is now Sears Tower;; George Gorman's Ice cream parlor open June 1865th.. North End Saloon started serving drinks July 2nd 1863 inside current day North Side Library Building before moving out March 9th 1865 after four years operations inside then South Side Library building There are also numerous historic buildings located within Downtown/Old South Village area such as: First Baptist Church built1850’s (); Masonic Temple built 1870’s (); United States Custom House constructed 1888(); Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company building completed 1912(); National Bank Of Commerce & Trust Building completed 1913 (); Harry S Truman Presidential Library & Museum completed 1945 ().
