On November 3, 1850, De Witt's township became the Town of Calumet City when it was made an official U.S. Territory by Congress under Act No 104-27 On January 1st 1861, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his brigade into what became known as "Forsyth Park" located east of present day Cicero Avenue and north-south alley on State Street just west of US Highway 6 near where Deer Park now stands In 1862 Union General Ambrose Burnside besieged Fort Donelson within sight but not within range of artillery fire; he ordered his troops to withdraw because they were short on ammunition French Canadian forces had also been Mustered Out after serving in Canada for one year or more; their equipment had been largely looted by Canadians who then proceeded to disband most units leaving behind many cannon and wagons unloadable so that they could be carted off to Chicago for use as farm implements or other materials such as building material Afterburnside decided against withdrawing his force because he thought cannons might still be available if used against Confederate troops retreating overland rather than through battle grounds A few days later Confederates attacked again without warning Union forces commander Fremont who was traveling with a detachment from New York Departmental Headquarters covering Burnside's retreat

After years of struggles to keep its status as a separate municipality, Calumet City became a part of the city in 1959. The city has experienced various forms of population growth over the years, reaching an all-time high in 2016 with over 68,000 residents. The history of Calumet City begins with John Calumet and James Calumet who founded it in 1836 on the banks of the Illinois River. John had immigrated to America from Scotland in 1795 and patented land that would become known as Calumet City. He and his brother James formed a partnership and started building homes on what is now North Avenue between State Street and Cicero Avenue. The first home was built on what is now Elm Street near where Wabash Avenue intersects Elm Street today. The Calumet City, Illinois land grant was given to the family of George Rogers Clark in 1804. The city was founded on June 1, 1837 by John Callahan and his brother-in-law, Michael Kelly. In 1846, the city became a county seat and was renamed Chicago. On December 15, 1868, Chicago merged with the County of Cook to form the state of Illinois.
