Canton, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Canton is located on the banks of the Chicago River and has a humid subtropical climate. The first people to live in what is now Canton were Native Americans who hunted and gathered shellfish along the riverbanks. In 1836, Judge Elijah Porter founded an agricultural settlement called Prairie du Chien on land that he had purchased from the Potawatomi Nation. The town was named for Captain Samuel Green Belt (1787-1853), a U.S. naval officer who fought in various wars against British forces during the War of 1812 and was also an explorer and surveyor in Michigan Territory. In 1857, Mayor James Cranch proposed that Canton be sold to developers for $1 million dollars to provide more room for development within its limits. The townsfolk approved of this plan and began preparations for construction of a water tower, market square, schools, churches and other public buildings. However, when it came time to actually build these projects, local money problems kept them from being completed until after General William Tecumseh Sherman's march through Illinois in April 1865 ended slavery in America and created Free Soil sympathizers throughout most of Midwest America including Canton which became their target city during hisnutritional campaign against Reconstructionists across Great Lakes states

When the United States acquired land north of Chicago in 1818, part of this area included what is now Canton Township (and adjacent parts of Scott and Jackson Counties). The township was organized on February 14, 1836, while still under Indian control. In 1850, when Illinois became a state, Canton became one of its twelve townships. It remained a rural agricultural community until the early 20th century; however, during that time it made significant advances in both economy and culture. In addition to being home to one of America's first cotton farms (the "Hanity Farm"), Canton also became known for its important industrial sector including papermaking and shoe manufacturing. The post-World War II period saw an increase in population growth as well as development within the Agricultural Productivity League (APL), which led to increased production at local mills and factories throughout the region. However, due to increasing competition from foreign manufacturers as well as technological advancements brought about by World War II - such as jet travel - many local businesses went bankrupt or closed their doors between 1945 and 1970s slump during which many residents lost their jobs or moved away from town altogether. A number redevelopment projects were launched during this time including plans for an expressway through town that never came to fruition due to various political changes over time; however some aspects such as public schools remain unchanged today despite recent efforts by developers.

The first permanent settler in Canton was John Stephenson, who arrived in 1839 and built a cabin on the east side of the creek. In 1840, two other men, William Haggerty and Isaac Myers, arrived and started a small store. By 1842, there were six settlers living in Canton. In 1843, General James Kapp organized an army to conquer Indian Territory. When he reached Canton, he called out all of the settlers to come out and fight for him against the Indians. About fifty people volunteered and they marched into battle against over a hundred Indians. Within minutes, most of the settlers had been killed or captured. Only Stephenson and Myersescaped alive. Aftermath of this battle made it necessary for Kapp to appoint a general officer to lead all of the white settlers in Indian Territory back into civilization as protectors instead of warriors
