Canton is a town in Kankakee County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville– Joliet Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Canton was settled by farmers in the late 18th century. By 1800, there were about 100 people in what is now Canton. In 1824, pioneers from Kankakee County founded a cabin near present-day Canton and began to cultivate land around it. In 1830, they built a log cabin on the banks of the Sangamon River. The first store and post office in Canton was established in 1836 by John Wurtzel and Amos Briggs. In 1839, James Clements platted what would become Canton Township on land donated by him and his wife Mary Jane Clements. The first school in Canton was built on this site in 1840 by Aiden Hillyer and Phebe Lankford. When Kankakee County was organized as a country parish in 1847, part of its territory including what would become Canton became part of that Parish. When Illinois became a state in 1848, all towns within Kankakee County were placed into one new township called Menardville north of the Sangamon River: men had not yet been granted voting rights statewide until then. On February 14 of that year, three days after Illinois became an official state with its own government – following annexation by Indiana – Menardville received its own vote for representativeness from voters living within township boundaries (and outside those limits if their township lay within Indian Territory). This process continued through May when all remaining municipalities within Kankakee were reduced to single townships; Menardville retained its individual status until it lost it to Rock Island Township on January 1st of 1865 when all villages within county limits were consolidated into Rock Island Boroughs under new sheriff/electors system which enjoyed no special privileges or immunity from taxation apart from property qualifications for membership (this change applied only to Rock Island Township itself not to any other municipality therein). Kankakee County residents voted overwhelmingly for consolidation on November 3rd of that year; however this measure failed due to lack of support among some sections thereof (primarily among white males) who felt they could best be served as independent communities rather than united under one roof with more centralized authority overseeing them; these sentiments also coloured much Antoine Paul’s later efforts at breaking up what he saw as corrupt leadership patterns and control over village affairs inside and outside borough boundaries throughout southern Cook County during his entire premiership From 1850 until 1865 elections took place exclusively via personal visits or absentee ballot instead of through open polls mandated by statute or ordinance because political power resided primarily with sheriffs/electors appointed pursuant thereto rather than citizens themselves As such while much has changed since then both physically & politically aspects have largely remained largely unchanged albeit suburbanization has gradually crept back into rural areas overall making local governmental services less available & expensive while simultaneously increasing competition between municipalities which often results in duplication & over-promotion of certain types / services while reducing access to others leading to increased costs taxpayers endure
