By 1877, Colt had become world leader in revolver production andcarbines were becoming less common. However, carbines remained popular among law enforcement agencies until around World War II when pistols replaced them as the mainstay of patrol officer firearms.
Carbondale, Illinois is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,775 at the 2010 census. Carbondale is the county seat of Kane County. It has a total area of 31 square miles (87 km²). The town was first settled by Italian immigrants in 1837 and named for one of their own: Carlo D'Arcangelo Carbondale. The original buildings were log huts and the first white settler to arrive was George Stephenson in 1839. In 1845, John Cisterns donated land to create what would become Carbondale's central business district; it became known as "the crescent." The railroad arrived in 1865 and made Carbondale an important transportation center. In 1895, Carbondale erected its first schoolhouse. The city's name comes from Park Street which runs through it and leads to Chicago Heights on the north side of the river. In 1886, Mayor Augustus Stonington petitioned the state legislature for a charter to form a new city within Kane County with its own government and budget; this request was granted and Carbondale became an independent city on February 15, 1886. On November 3rd of that year voters approved incorporation into the United States as a result of a referendum held by Cook County newspapers publisher James Boggs; ninety-eight percent of those who voted supported incorporation according to local sources Historical Society records dating back to 1889 show that there had been opposition to incorporation from anti-incorporation groups including "a band of men led by John Fenton" who harassed people who dared cross their path outside businesses located on Park Street near Stevenson High School until finally being stopped by carbondonales police officers late one night when several dozen protestors assembled
