The history of Centralia, Illinois starts with the arrival of Europeans in the area in 1780. The first European settlers were French Canadians who arrived at the mouth of the Kankakee River. Shortly after, a group of Germans also settled in Centralia. In 1814, a group of Americans arrived in Centralia and soon began to develop the town. By 1830, Centralia had a population of around 100 people.
