Chicago Heights is a neighborhood in the city of Chicago, Illinois. It is located in the West Side, near the University of Chicago and other downtown attractions. The population of Chicago Heights was 12,897 at the 2010 census. The first inhabitants of what is now Chicago Heights were Native Americans. This area was part of the Potawatomi Nation until 1830 when they ceded it to Illinois as part of Treaty No. 2 which ended the War of 1812. The area became known as "The Prairie" because of its rolling terrain and lack of trees. In 1847, a group of Englishmen who had been living in Canada came overland and built a log cabin on what is now Elmhurst Avenue in what is now Park Forest Cemetery. They named their home "Chicago Heights". The first white people to live permanently in this area were John Atherton and his family who purchased land from the Potawatomi Nation in 1848. During World War II, many Japanese-Americans lived here due to fear that they would be interned during the war if they did not identify themselves as Japanese-American. After Pearl Harbor, most Japanese-Americans moved away from Chicago Heights but some remained behind for fear that their homes would be taken away during wartime searches or raids by military authorities. Some chose to stay and fight with Japan while others went into hiding or sought sanctuary abroad after Japan's surrender rejection on September 3rd, 1945
The Chicago Heights neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois was a largely White working-class area located in the northwestern quadrant of the city. The first European settlers in what is now Chicago Heights were Dutchmen who arrived in 1660. The area was first called Heerenveen and then Oudenaarde before it was renamed to Chicago Heights in 1892. The neighborhood grew rapidly after incorporation into the city and by 1900 it contained over 1,000 residents. However, during the Great Depression, many residents left or were pushed out ofChicago Heights as poverty and joblessness increased. In the mid-1930s, however, many new homeowners began to move intoChicago Heights after purchasing homes from previous owners who had been forced to sell because of lack of affordable housing. Although most people inChicago Heights are descendants of those that initially moved there, some new families have also moved here since incorporation.
