Dekalb, Illinois is a small village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. Dekalb was founded in 1836 by John DeKalb and his family. It became an incorporated village in 1949. The Village of Dekalb is located about northwest of Chicago on the east bank of the Chicago River. It is bordered to the north by Evanston Township and to the south by South Holland Township. The village has a total area of . Dekalb was first settled as part of what was then Dutch New Netherland on September 24, 1836 by John DeKalb and his family from Georgia. They named their settlement after George Washington's estate in Virginia where they had been living since 1814 when their father purchased land there from James Kent Cooke for $2,000 cash. On December 3, 1837 Dekalb's first school opened with ten students under teacher Isaac Aspinwall. It operated until 1840 when it closed due to lack of funding from local officials. In 1850 DeKalb developed a mill which produced flour for local merchants and also supplied raw materials for making shoes and other products sold throughout Cook County such as leather and canvas goods made at two businesses run by DeKalber brothers: Webster & Brothers (a tannery) on West Des Plaines Avenue near present-day State Street; and Pabst Brewery on North Clark Street just west of Dearborn Road (now owned by Google).
