In 1951, Mayor Ed Burke proposed that all residents within city limits vote on whether they wished annexation into the larger city or remain independent villages subject to mayoral review and referendum every five years. The vote resulted in a majority wanting annexation into the larger city - which became reality two years later when City Council passed an ordinance annexing unincorporated areas west of I-90 into the city limits along with those east OF I-90. Today Des Plaine features high school districts serving portions of Village West (northwest corner Of State Road 271), Northwest Side (southwest corner Of State Road 485), Forest Park/Lakewood (east side Of I-290), Douglas Heights/Lincoln Square (northwest corner Of Kane Rd.), northwest side Elgin Township ( northeast cornerOF High St.) and many other smaller districts including Bloomingdale Gardens/Erie Hills/Oak Lawn southwestside Arlington Heights northeast side Skokie south side thousands more homes are added each year making it one continued suburban growth story across several decades!
