It is part of the Quad Cities region and has a significant agricultural history. The name Dixon comes from John Dixon, an early settler who arrived in 1829. In 1865, Anna Maria Childs founded what is now Metropolitan Community Church in Dixon as a religious center for African Americans in search of racial integration. The city was laid out by Elias Howe on April 2, 1881 as part of his plan to create a new township within Kane County that would be racially integrated and open to whites only. Dixon's growth paralleled that of Kane County as a whole; it had no incorporated village until 1945 when it became one of four villages created by the Act No. 8 of 1945 which established the Quad Cities Regional Airport near Carbondale-Hennepin County lines. A cotton gin and mill were built along the Sangamon River just north of town in 1915; these mills continue to operate today and contribute significantly to the local economy. Two other notable businesses that have been active in downtown Dixon since its incorporation are Ducharme's Department Store (founded 1916) and General Motors (founded 1927). Dixon experienced some high-profile developments during its formative years: AnnaMaria Childs Park was opened in 1964 adjacent to her original church; then came Lincoln Elementary School (1961), which became one of Illinois' first major public education institutions for black students; finally, Stagg High School (1964), which helped define suburban / inner-city diversity within Kane County before suburbanization took hold throughout much of Cook County over the following decades
