The town was founded by Captain James Butler and his wife, Mary, in 1812. At that time, Dixon consisted of just a few homes and a few businesses. The first gun case made in Dixon was built by Captain Butler. This Case had two barrels each with twenty-four rounds inside it. It weighed one hundred pounds and cost fifteen dollars to make. Dixon, Illinois is a town located in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. Dixon has been inhabited by Native Americans since at least the 16th century. The first European to explore Dixon was French explorer Pierre Le Moyne à La Salle in 1679. In 1811, John C. Fremont explored the area and named it after General James K. Polk of the United States Army Corps of Engineers who had fought with him during the Mexican–American War. In 1865, Dixon became part of the Union side in the American Civil War as a result of its location on both sides of the Great Western Railroad which ran through that state and into Illinois. It voted for Abraham Lincoln over Stephen A. Douglas because they felt he would be more sympathetic to their views than Douglas, who they thought would favor slavery over freedom for their people. At war's end in 1865, Dixon reverted back to Confederate control until November 3rd when Union troops burned all evidence of Confederate activity within city limits including stores and homesqv The townspeople petitioned for incorporation as a village in 1868 but were denied by McLean County Board of Commissioners due to lack of space and population growth alone; this made it one of only two townships in McLean County not incorporated into either county until 1902 (the other being Beech Grove). On October 15th 1902, Dixon absorbed part of neighboring Harvey Township; this gave them a total population size exceeding 2,000 for the first time ever with no annexations or mergers taking place between 1922-1945. During World War II there was an increase in joiners coming from nearby Harrisonburg because hostilities raged outside their town borders; however most residents left before 1945 due to changes occurring within that community such as integration which started happening throughout America during that time period thanks largely to Marshall Plan funding which helped spur economic development throughout Europe and North Africa

In 1865, the name of the town changed from Indianola to Dixon when it became part of Cook County. The population of Dixon increased rapidly during the late 19th century due to increased agricultural production throughout west Sangamon County; however, during World War II most of this growth stopped as cotton production shifted southward into Iowa and other parts of the US. However, since 2000 there have been several small increases in population due to retirements and new businesses opening up around town such as health care facilities and restaurants

After city boundaries were redrawn following the Civil War, Dixon continued to be part of Chicago until 1880 when it passed underspells control by both sides resulting in its incorporation into newly created Cook County - which included parts of downtown Chicago (including Dearborn Street). This move contributed significantly to collarbone growth within downtown Chi-town while eliminating any competition from young wonderland called South Side Village on Michigan Avenue North (now Midtown Manhattan).
