At that time, it was one of the largest ammunition production centers in the United States. During World War I, Dolton became known for its production of artillery shells and rifles with 20-inch barrels. In 1924, it produced ammunition for the U.S. military using both black powder and smokeless powders. In 1939, Dolton became an armament manufacturing center for Springfield Armory Corporation when that company moved its operations to this city from Rockford, Illinois (then part of Moline). Among other things, Dolton has been home to several pioneer firearms manufacturers such as Colt Firearms Company and Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Today, Dalston Ammunition is one of the largest producers of reloadable rounds in the world and maintains a presence in Olatheville thanks to their longstanding relationship with Arsenal Ammunition Manufacturing Company (now Thompson Armory).

The first ammunition company in Dolton was the Volcanic Arsenal Company, which manufactured powder, shot and cannons for the American Revolution. In 1865, the Colt Arms Manufacturing Company moved from Hartford, Connecticut to Dolton and started making revolvers and other firearms there. The company became Colt Firearms Corporation in 1899. In 1923, Winchester Repeating Arms Company merged with Colt Firearms Corporation to form Winchester Ammunition Corporation. In 1930, H&R Block formed a subsidiary called United Ammo Company that produced rifles, shotguns and pistols under license from Winchester Ammunition Corporation. During World War II it produced munitions for the military including artillery shells, concussion bombs and incendiary weapons.
Dolton is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2000 census. Dolton is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Dolton is located on the west side of Kane County and east of the city of Chicago. The town was founded in 1851 by John Dolton and his wife Rebecca. It was named after George Dolton, one of their brothers-in-law. George had emigrated from England in 1825 and died in 1849 while serving as captain in the Union Army during the Mexican–American War. His widow Hannah moved to Dolton with her two children, Samuel and Lydia, who would later become teachers. In 1865, they acquired land on which they built a house that still stands today: it is now called "the Old House." In 1895, John Dolton donated land for a public school which would eventually become Kane County High School; it was dedicated on October 15th that year by then-Governor William Jennings Bryan. The first principal of KCHS was Mrs. Carrie Southwick Dodge (1892-1974). The current principal is Drs Lisa Griggs and Donna Loyola Gibbons (1994-present). John Dolton also helped found what is now known as Roscoe Park Elementary School in 1899; it served students from kindergarten through eighth grade until its closure in 2001 due to budget cuts made by then-Kane County Superintendent Roderick Jahnke Sr.. Afterword murals were created by renowned artist Dan Klostermann honoring Mr. & Mrs. DolTON's philanthropy which can be viewed inside the elementary building today! In 1923, Joliet Township purchased farmland east of town for $2 million dollars to build Joliet Township High School; it opened its doors to students on September 5th of that year! From 1954 until 1965 when KCHS merged with nearby Aurora Central High School (now Aurora East), KCHS operated as an all girls school! For many years following that merger there were rumors going around about why KCHS never reopened after merging with another high school - some believe because AuroraEast didn't have enough money to finance an expansion like KCHS did when they first opened or because Joliet Township wasn't happy with how things were working out.; however no evidence has ever surfaced proving any collusion between these schools! In 1997 a new high school called Cookman Ridge became available within walking distance of both Hinsdale North High School and Aurora Central High School so both schools closed down their fences and let their students cross into Cookman Ridge whereupon they went into classes at Cookman Ridge! This move allowed more kids from south Side neighborhoods such as Fuller Woods/Lincolnwoods to attend north Side schools instead of having to go miles away for sports or other activities like before! Finally we have Roscoe Park Jr./Spalding Middle Academy whichopened up next door last fall so finally everyone can get along without fighting!!! It should also be noted that since 1925 there have been over 100 individual families who've contributed something significant towards making Dolton what it is today - whether it be property donations or financial support through taxes/deductions etc... These individuals are listed alphabetically within this paper below under "The DOLTON Group".
