The first people to live in what is now Dolton were the Potawatomi Indians. The town was founded by white settlers in 1868 when they began buying land from the Potawatomi Indians. The first store and post office were built in 1870. When the railroad came through Dolton, it brought many new residents and businesses with it. Today, Dolton is known for its cheese industry, as well as its annual "Cheese Fest." The current courthouse was built in 1907 and located on Main Street across from the old schoolhouse which has been used as a storage area for local government since 1978. In 1915, two brothers named Harry and Clarence Weiland bought 1/3 of all of Joliet Township and then subdivided it into lots for sale to settlers who would build homes there. They christened their new community "Dolton" after their own home state of Illinois (of course weiland also spelled this with an S). It wasn't until 1922 that they added the word "village" to distinguish it from other towns around them that had similar names like "Hutchinson", etc.). In 1952-1953 a zoning ordinance was passed making building permits only available to farmers or ranchers living within three miles of each other on public land; this helped spur development along US Route 66 between Chicago and St Louis - which lead to more stores opening up throughout Joliet Township including one called Dillons Drugs & Hardware where you can still find items like milk jugs, meat cleavers, butter knives & forks today!

It is named after George Dolton, a pioneer settler. The first post office was established in 1839. The township was organized on February 15, 1851. On November 3, 1865, the townships of Parkwood and Woodridge were merged into Dolton Township. On January 1, 1881, the last remaining section of woodland within Dolton Township was annexed to neighboring Parkwood Township. The town has experienced many changes over its history including being called "the Athlete's Town" during the 1800s because of its many talented athletes; becoming an agricultural center during Prohibition; reverting to its rural roots during World War II when a large munitions plant was built there; and most recently experiencing growth as an bedroom community for Springfield. Today, Dolton offers typical Midwestern values such as small town living with easy access to important amenities such as schools and businesses; friendly people who are always willing to help; and a rich cultural heritage that includes historical events that take place each year like the annual Tomato Festival or Big game parade which features local teams from throughout McLean County along with national names like the American Legion or National Football League players from nearby Illinois colleges The original area where Dolnton now stands used to be filled with dense forest which supported numerous animal populations including deer, bear, moose and elk. Over time however due to deforestation this area became mostly farm land with a few scattered trees until it reached what is now Main Street in 1840 when James Dolton settled down in what is now known as Old Town Follettown (now part of Tolna). In those early days there were only three homes in all of Follettown: James’s house on High Street near present day Market Square (now part of Wolcott), Martha’s house on Elm Street east of High Street (now part of Joliet) and Anna’s house on Oak Grove southwest of present day Court Square (now part of Normal). By 1860 there were over 100 residents living here according to records kept by Peter Hoey who served as Clerk at the courthouse from 1830-1859 During prohibition more than two hundred citizens turned out for a public meeting held on October 17th,, 1919 at School House #2 in order discuss ways state prohibition could be enforced without infringing upon private property rights . After about two hours discussion it was decided that taxes would need to be raised significantly if prohibition were going to be effective so gassing plants needed approval from local officials before they could go online . A committee then met on November 3rd consisting 5 citizens plus one representative from Chicago who chaired deliberations During this time county residents had their own bootlegging operations taking place just blocks away at several different locations but all efforts failed leading authorities eventually rounding up everyone involved and bringing them back into compliance This event marked perhaps the peak period for lawlessness within the community because since then everything has slowly returned back under control b ut some aspects remain unchanged such as high rates for vehicle registration renewal etc
