During its early years as a small community east of Chicago only a few people lived there due to transportation limitations caused by ice storms that affect Chicago frequently during those days. In 1840s residents constructed their first permanent homes starting with two log cabins near what is now First Street and Second Avenue . By 1847 there were over 150 people living in these homes which included many soldiers who had been stationed nearby during the War for Independence including General Anthony Wayne who built a house just north of First Street . Ida Buell moved to what is now East Moline from Wisconsin when she married Captain George Wright – father of Rear Admiral Jesse Wofford – back at her mother’s home where they operated The Iowa State Journal newspaper for several years prior to moving westward into this new town . Mrs. Buell soon became interested in developing this settlement so upon her return from her honeymoon she met Colonel John J. However, with recent investments from private companies and growth projects such as new schools and hospitals downtown since 2000-2010 the city is expected to rebound soon.
