There is no one answer to the question of what made East Moline, Illinois become a place where people risked their lives carrying firearms. Ultimately, it was the availability of cheap guns and a climate that was conducive to gun smuggling that contributed to this city’s reputation as a hotbed of firearm activity. The first known reference to East Moline as a center forgun trafficking seems to date back to 1892. At the time, Chicago-based arms dealer Augustus Milnor was selling rifles and shotguns through his business in East Moline. One customer who bought a rifle from Milnor described him as “a very important man in Chicago, with connections all over the United States.” It is unclear if Milnor himself transported or sold firearms here but he must have been aware of the city’s potential for gun smuggling because he refers toEastMoline in 1895 as being “the most flourishing port on Lake Michigan[.]” Gunsmuggling had already become an issue in Illinois by this point however, it wasn’t until 1907 that law enforcement began focusing specifically on involving organized crime in this area. At this point, gangs such as The Irish Mafia were beginning to control much of downtown Chicago and they were looking for ways to bring guns into the city safely andaunder them quickly before they could be seized by law enforcement. As a result of these investigations,gunrunning became more difficult and expensive within Illinois while also leadingto increased criminal activity throughout the state. In 1928, Milwaukee-based arms dealer Harry Jorgensen discoveredthatEastMoline was becoming an ideal location for firearm smuggling due its well-developed infrastructure and low taxes on weapons sales. He established his company here and soon began importing large quantities of handguns into the city from across America - making EastMoline one of the largest sourcesof smuggled firearms in North America at this point. Jorgensen even built up a strong relationship with local politicians so that he could get preferential treatment when it came time to sell weaponry within town limits – something which helped make EastMoline one of the most crime ridden areas in America during this period.(1) This new level Ofcriminal Activity didn’t last long though as Jorgensen himself fell out with some key members of his organization soon after his acquisitionofthe company (2). This event ledto tension betweenJorgensen and several influential individuals within Milwaukee which ultimately doomedhisbusinessideologyandimmediately precededby many years Of bloodshedamongMilwaukeebasedcrimegroups.(3) Eventually though,Jorgensen reformed his organization fully under new management & resumedimportinggunsintoMilwaukee&otherpartsoftheUnitedStatesbutneveragaindidheoperateinEastMolina.(4)

On December 1st, 1881the Village of East Moline was organized from a portion of the Town of Rockford by an act passed by the General Assembly with full approval by President Abraham Lincoln. East Moline has been home to many businesses over its history including - Armour & Co., Jiffy Lube Service Station, Ford Motor Company plants #1 & #2 located on Park Avenue across from State Farm Arena/EastMolina Coliseum hybrid football stadium also known as Joe Dow Stadium prior to that name change in 1984 when then-Governor Richard Nixon dedicated it in memory of legendary coach Joe Dow who had coached at MTU before becoming Governor in 1978). The township was organized on April 16, 1814 under the name La Salle Township; it contained only about 100 acres (40 km2) and had no resident sheriff or justices. In 1846, following annexation by Chicago as part of a larger metropolitan area, East Moline became its own municipality with a population estimated at 25,000 people. In 1896 it became an unincorporated area within Cook County as part of efforts to reduce taxes levied by Chicago's then-larger government. Today, East Moline remains one of the most vibrant cities in Illinois with diverse cultural attractions including art galleries and theaters as well as several high-tech companies including Intel Xeon Processor plants (controlled by Motorola), KFC restaurants/stores and Apple Inc.'s Cupertino Campus headquarters complex which opened in 2007 just east of downtown; home to more than 200 businesses employing over 4500 people across 17 separate sectors including health care services (EMC Healthcare), information technology (IBM WebSphere Servers), manufacturing (Gap Bandwidth Products) and retail trade (Jamba Juice). The East Moline area was first settled in 1836. It became a community after the Illinois Central Railroad built a line from Springfield to East Moline. The town was named for the eastern border of what is now Bloomington, Indiana. In 1894, the railroad merged with the Illinois Central Railway and adopted the new name, Chicago & North Western. In 1912, ESMU became one of three universities in Illinois (along with UIUC and UIHC) that were created as part of the University of Chicago system. In 1920, ESMU moved from its original location on State Street to its current site on Memorial Drive. The university has since grown larger and more comprehensive than ever before, enrolling over 50,000 students in 2019-2020.
