In fact, Gentry quickly became an important figure within the community as he began helping law enforcement officials investigate crimes and carry out investigations related to firearms. He even served as Mayor of Edwardsville for a time before his death in 1859. The following year saw another significant event within the community when two men were arrested for trying to buy guns from an individual known for selling illegal weapons across town. It wasn't long before more arrests followed – these gentlemen were eventually found guilty and sentenced to prison terms! As it turns out, these convictions did nothing but help solidify relationships between locals and law enforcement officers – something that continues today! Throughout this time period, there were also several occasions where individuals attempted or succeeded in smuggling firearms into town using various methods including bribes or subterfuge. Prior to its incorporation as a city in 1892, Edwardsville was a rural community of 1,500 people. Edwardsville first emerged as an agricultural community before becoming one of the most important towns in the Edwards County region for lumber production during the 19th century. In 1892, when Chicago became an incorporated city and Edwardsville became its second municipality, much of what had been productive farmland within its limits were absorbed into the new city and its twin town of River Grove. Today Edwardsville remains a mainly residential community with some commercial activity but little economic impact outside of its own borders. The earliest settlers to what is now Edwardsville were Levi Allen and his family who arrived in 1799 from New York City on the ship "Eagle". They built a log cabin on present day Maple Street which still stands today as one of only two buildings in town that are original to their time period (the other being the old post office). The village initially consisted only of these two structures and grew quickly due to their importance as local transportation links between rural areas within our county and downtown Chicago – something that continues to this day. In 1800s there were several other early settlers including John Cook who settled on land located east of present-day Elmira just south of Interstate 94; Moses Beecher arrived around 1811; Daniel Webster settled about 1830 on land located between Elmira and North Aurora; Solomon Eaton also arrived about 1830 near what is now North Aurora Road; all these pioneers brought with them their skills necessary for successful agriculture life such as planting crops etc., however it wasn't until afterenovelty when many more farmers moved into our area including Jno Fields who purchased 640 acres along Sangamon River from Nathan Drake in 1848. This allowed us to become one very large agricultural society which has continued onto this day without any major changes whatsoever since then! It should be noted that even though we have continuous growth over time thanks largely to continual influxes by new arrivals we have never lost our sense or culture shock when things change inside or outside our walls! Our citizens continue to respond swiftly & unanimously whenever there is an issue or concern that affects not just themselves but all those living within our boundaries!
