Edwardsville, Illinois is a city located in Edwards County, Illinois, United States. The population was 28,567 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Edwards County and one of its three municipalities. The other two are Normal and Decatur. Edwardsville was founded in 1855 by settlers from Ohio. At that time it was a small town on the eastern edge of what is now Edwardsburg, Indiana. By 1860 it had grown to become a major center for agricultural production in central Illinois due to its location between the Sangamon River and the Great Lakes region. In 1865, Edwardsville became an independent municipality with full voting rights and municipal government began operations under a mayor-council system which remained in place until 1975. In 1976, Edwardsville became home to Ford Motor Company's plant for the production of Buick vehicles before being moved to nearby Pascagoula in 1979.
