Edwardsville is a small town in Hardin County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,041 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gary, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Edwardsville post office was established in 1875 and discontinued operation in 1957. The first store on Main Street was built in 1876 by Wm. A. Griggs and later passed down to his son-in-law Simeon Crouse and then to his grandson George Griggs until it closed its doors in 1954. From 1916 to 1951 the town had its own school district which also included Carbondale and Galesburg; however, when that district disbanded it merged with the Hardin County School District #3 effective September 1, 1951. According to the US Census Bureau, Edwardsville has a total area of , of which is land and (1%) is water.

Edwardsville, Illinois is a small town located in Macomb County, Illinois. The population was 5,382 at the 2010 census. Edwardsville was founded on December 12, 1838 by Captain George Edwards and his wife Peggy. The town was named after General James Edwards who fought in the War of 1812. It first became a village on January 1, 1902. On November 3rd of that year, the village merged with neighboring towns of Ottawa and Hammond to form a new city known as Edwardsville. The history of Edwardsville can be traced back to its earliest days as an agricultural community. In 1838, Captain George Edwards decided to set up shop in what is now downtown Edwardsville after leaving his previous post as military governor of Michigan Territory. He and his wife Peggy came up with the idea to name their new town after General James Edward's victory over the British in the War of 1812 which allowed United States independence from Great Britain. The couple purchased 640 acres (246 hectares) near what is now downtown Edwardsville and began construction on their home on December 12th of that year. The first residents of Edwardsville were Captain George and Peggy Edwards themselves along with their families and some local farmers who had come over for dinner that night at their house-basecamp-for purposes unknown today but likely included practicing agriculture or surveying land bought from Native American tribes living within sight or reach of the fledgling settlement. Edwardsville quickly grew into a thriving community thanks to its well-developed infrastructure including two churches(one Methodist and one Baptist), three banks (the First National Bank, Citizens State Bank & Trust Company, & Peoples Savings Bank), four stores/markets/grocery stores (Marriott's store being built in 1893), two schools (one private school -startedelementary school in 1888-'89; one public school started kindergarten in 1886), two sawmills (' Eddystone' mill being constructed c 1840; 'Cascade' mill being constructed 1889-'90) as well as several other businesses such as hotels/motels ('The White House', 'The Courier Hotel', etc.), grain elevators ('Baker Elevator'), blacksmiths('Goudreau Bros.' hammer works'), carriage shops(including one owned by John Marshall Harlan), carpenters(including one Ownby Brothers company), photographers('Nelson Linehan Photography Company') among others! All told there were more than 100 businesses operating outfitted with all sorts of tools and equipment during this early period including grist mills (Eddystone & Cascade Mills Combined having been built c 1840; Baker Elevator built 1865,) sawmills (Cascade Mill being constructed 1889-'90,) crop production facilities such as plows, hoes, seed drills etc., water systems providing potable water for street lights throughout the community,' farm animals like pigs, cows etc., German Shepherds (& poodles) kept by Mrs Wigglesworth; ice cream parlors opened up around this time!' wrote historian Don Roeder about life back then! It wasn't until 1907 when electric power arrived in our area making possible all those aforementioned enterprises! By 1915 downtown had become completely self-sufficient thanks largely to contributions from citizens not just through donations but also through taxation levied against imported goods which helped fund public works projects like sewers & roads etc.' continued Roeder . Today remnants still exist including an old cotton gin still used for crushing corn kernels leftovers from processing crops back then! Downtown also features a few original buildings dating back to these earlier years e example: "Old Western Union Telegraph Building" once operated by Northwestern Bell Telephone Company long ago vacated for use as an office building it occupies today... Other buildings include: Pritchard Hotel erected 1895,' First Presbyterian Church edifice 1898,' Marshall School edifice 1901,' Cook County Courthouse1899-'1900,' US Post Office 1906.'
Edwardsville was founded in 1809 by John Edwards and his family. It became a town in 1831, and was named after John Edwards' father. The first post office in Edwardsville was established in 1827. In 1861, the Union Army burned down the home of Colonel James H. Shields, which caused him to donate land to the town for a square. The original courthouse was built in 1865, and it is still used today. In 1907, Edward's son Hiram A. Edwards became the first Mayor of Edwardsville.
