As ammunition production increased in Elgin, Illinois during the 1800s, so too did demand for firearms. One of the earliest handguns manufactured in Elgin were pistols designed by George Stephenson. The first 1851 pistol was made with a single-shot revolver barrel and was used by Stephenson to protect himself while traversing a railroad track. By 1857, however, pistols had become standard issue and were used by the military, law enforcement, and civilians. In 1892, John Fenton began producing rounds for shotguns in Elgin. Elgin, Ill. (/ˈɛlɪŋi/; formerly Elgin, Rock Island County, Illinois) is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Rock Island County. As of 2019, the population was 126,819. The city was founded on December 12, 1837 by residents of the town of North Centralia on the north bank of the River Des Plaines opposite Chicago. The name "Elgin" originated from an early settler's proposal to change the original name for "Rock Island". The first post office in Elgin was established in 1839 and remained open until it was closed in 1861 due to lack of shipments from Nauvoo, Illinois (now Nauvoo, Iowa). The first store opened in 1840 and remains open as a business today. In 1843–44 local farmers started raising cottonseed for export to England because there were no other crops that could be grown in this area during that time period. This led to development around what is now Union Station with mills being built beginning around 1846 including one known as Armstrong Cotton Mills which became world-renowned for its spinning machines at that time In 1861 Elgin amalgamated with Rock Island County (now Kane County) to form a new government with more power over land use and commerce than ever before. At this point downtown began to grow rapidly and today it is one of America's most vibrant urban areas The Great Western Railroad arrived here in 1865 bringing jobs manufacturing locomotives and railroad cars across country On November 15th 1870 construction began on Northwestern Pacific Railroad's main line between Chicago and Omaha extending through Elgin into what is now Kendall County Today many businesses still call or live near Union Station including Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy's Department Store, Ford Motor Company plants etc The community has recently seen several developments such as a $160 million shopping center built next door to Interstate 90 providing much needed retail space for local businesses adjacent to Marshall Park as well as large new apartments being developed just east of downtown called "Downtown Development"

In 1965 when Mayor Richard Jorczyk announced plans to build a new high school adjacent to current UIUC campus; he received support from then- Governor Bruce Rauner who directed state government officials to review all programs which were detrimental to black residents living near white businesses.
