The area that would become Elgin was first settled by Native Americans and explorer George Washington journeyed through this region on his way to reach Mount Rushmore National Monument in southern Minnesota on July 4, 1785. On December 6, 1810, the town of Peoria was founded by Major General Jonathan Edwards with 600 residents. In 1817, a new county was formed from parts of old Will County and Peoria became its capital. The first school opened in Peoria on December 3rd, 1817 under teacher Louisa May Alcott; it served as an elementary school until1836 when a new high school was built and renamed for Mrs. Edwards (nowAlma Mater). In 1834–35 work began on what would become known as “The Great Northern Railway”; this line would eventually connect Chicago with Milwaukee and Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania via Elgin and Carbondale. This event helped spur development in Elgin which quickly grew into one of the largest cities in Northwestern Illinois. Today there are over 60 businesses located within walking distance of each other – including several large shopping malls – as well as numerous restaurants and nightlife options available throughout downtown Elgin. What once consisted primarily of small family-owned businesses has now turned into an electronics/manufacturing hub for much of Northwestern Illinois with many major companies having their headquarters hereabouts too!
