It is the second most populous city in Cook County and one of the seven cities in Chicago metropolitan area. Elgin was founded by John Pemberton in 1834 and incorporated as a town on November 14, 1835. On December 1, 1847, it became a village and was renamed Elgin Village on January 1st of that year. On May 8th of 1949 it became an incorporated city after passing a referendum vote with 58% yes votes to 42%. In 1990 it passed another referendum vote to become an Urban Zone which resulted in its current status as an urban center with several thousand residents. The economy of Elgin is based largely on manufacturing and services such as education, health care and other professional services. The city has been home to Northwestern University since 1863 when its first campus opened there. Other large employers include Motorola Solutions ( Moto) and United Parcel Service ( UPS). The major cultural institutions located in or near downtown Elgin are the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC), North Shore Republican Club House Museum (!), Kane County Community College District's Kendall Campus (KCCD), Elmhurst College-Chicago branch (ELM), Stritch School of Chiropractic/Healthcare/Dentist Care (STSC) and nearby Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company corporate headquarters also known as "The Guggenheim".

Elgin, Illinois is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 5,711 at the 2000 census. It has been shrinking since then- its population in 2010 was 4,848 people. Elgin is considered one of the most rural towns in Illinois. The only industry that exists here is farming and wheat production. The first European to see Elgin was a Frenchman named Jean Baptiste La Salle on October 14th, 1795 while exploring the area for new fur trading opportunities. He named the site "Elgin" after his home town of Eglinton in Scotland. La Salle journeyed downriver until he arrived at what he thought were two forks of the Chicago River but upon further exploration found only one stream flowing into Lake Michigan and another fork leading to the Atlantic Ocean! This event marked not just an important discovery but also a sign of French control over this part of North America because it gives France an edge over Great Britain as well as Spanish control over Mexico City which would later tie both countries together culturally! The first settlers to arrive in what is now Elgin were farmers who came up from central Illinois during the early 1800s looking for better farmland than what they had back home. One such pioneer was John Pemberton who set out from Iowa Territory in 1824 with his family and built a cabin near where today's Main Street stands. In 1827, Pemberton married Sarah King and within a few years had four children including two girls- Anna (born around 1830) and Margaret (born about 1835). By 1840, John Pemberton had lost interest in farming and moved his family westward to Oregon where they soon died along with many other pioneers during the Gold Rush era; however their story lives on through their children who continue to make their presence known hereabouts today! Another early settler was James Fenton who settled on land near present day Elmira about 1840 when he saw good land for farming near Kankakee Lake. Because there wasn't much water available nearby elsehelmina started construction on a dam that would become Kankakee Lake Park today! As time passed more people traveled westward including others from Oregon like Solomon Finsterwald whose farm became Shullsburg before eventually selling it to Harry Read who foundedread glass works therein1860 which continued until 1893 when it merged with Alcoa Aluminum Works producing aluminum cans all throughout Kane County! Today you can still find those aluminum cans littering throughout town center if you look hard enough! Another early settler was Edward Sibley who removed 1 mile (1 km) east of present day Elmira on property belonging to Nicholas Bickerton beginning late 1800s; this stretch now forms part of Old Noonday Road which runs parallel downtown between First National Bank & St Joseph’s Catholic Church! A man by the name of Alexander Graham Bell moved from Canada sometime after 1850s settling at what is now Watertown about seven miles southwest of Elmira on some high ground overlooking White Rock Creek which led him to invent telephone service back then!! When Bell learned about how telegraph lines functionedhe decided to install them here so that communication could be done faster between different parts of America!!! After hearing reports about similar technologies being developed elsewhereBell sent employees out West searching for equipment needed back East so telephone service could be established throughout Northwestern Indiana!!! Unfortunately due technological advancements American Telephone Company became interested in using Colorado Springs residents Bob Wasserman & Edwin Vail insteadof hiring qualified Americans thereby preventing telephone service statewide!!! Although AT&T eventually abandoned telecommunications services across Northwestern Indiana they left behind an important legacy: A major phone company located RIGHT NEXT TO OUR CITIES!!!!
