One of the most popular shooting sports in the United States, target shooting, began to take hold in Elgin, Illinois, in the 1840s. One of the first individuals to introduce target Shooting to this community was Captain Samuel Morse. From 1844-1845 he owned and operated a small gun shop on Market Street. In 1847 Morse organized a local rifle club. The first meeting was held on October 1st at which Captain Morse announced that six rounds would be fired from a .22 caliber rifle at ten feet (3 meters). Initially only men could join these clubs as there were no facilities for women or children to shoot targets. By 1860 there were over fifty clubs statewide and 500 members in Elgin alone. In 1862 Captain John J. Sweeny founded the Illinois Rifle Association with the goal of promoting “the use of firearms for hunting purposes only” within our state. This organization soon became one of the largest and most influential in American rifle history due to their influence in organizing Independents into groups known as “firearm societies” throughout much of America during this time period. With such an important impact on firearm reform during this time period, it is interesting to note that Captain Sweeny is also credited with being one of the primary developers behind modern Target Shooting practices used today across all formats including airsoft replica games! By 1870 there were over 2,000 member organizations nationwide and 2 million rifles had been sold by 1875! It wasn't until World War II when Target Shooting truly took off across America as people turned to it as an affordable way to enjoy outdoor activities such as camping and fishing however Elgin's legacy continues today with many annual tournaments hosted here including Super Bowl weekend events!
