In 1851, the first school was built and it became a public school district in 1872. The city annexed neighboring towns of Arlington Heights, Streamwood, Lombard Park and Wauconda on January 1, 1907. On July 1, 1930, Elk Grove annexed Canada Lake Estates which made it one of only two cities in Illinois to have both an incorporated village (the other being Wheaton). The economy of Elk Grove has been based largely on agriculture since its incorporation as a municipal community; however over time this has changed to include manufacturing as well as services such as health care and recreation. Elmhurst Mall is located within walking distance of most residents while several restaurants and nightlife establishments dot the center-line commercial strip around downtown which features recently renovated retail buildings dating back to at least the early 1900s. According to 2000 U.S Census data, there were 318 residents age 25 or older living in Elkhorn Village; this had decreased to 269 by 2006 but increased slightly to 303 by 2010 due largely to annexation of Canada Lake Estates from Wheaton Township

Elk Grove Village, Illinois is a small city located in DuPage County, Illinois. The population was 46,898 at the 2010 census. Elk Grove Village is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It has a history dating back to 1836 when Elijah Woods and his brother-in-law George Washington Krieger founded what is now called Elmhurst Township on the east side of Chicago. In 1839, they laid out a town square which still resides today as centerpiece of the village. Elk Grove Village was incorporated as a village on November 6, 1892. The name comes from two large elks that were found near where it exists today. At first, residents used these animals for their grazing needs but soon began to build homes around them and call their new community "Elk Grove". This name stuck and has been used by the village ever since. The most significant event in Elk Grove's history occurred on July 4th, 1912 when US President Woodrow Wilson delivered his famous keynote address at Northwestern University in Evanston (now Chicago). That day, Elk Grove became one of America's first towns to have electric lights put into its streetslight system! Today, Elmhurst Township remains an important agricultural community with many businesses clustered around its twenty miles of rural roads and six villages: Elmhurst Park/Elsieville; Apple Valley; Arlington Heights; Danvers; Glen Ellyn; La Grange; Orland Hills; Prospect Heights/Prairie View Terrace and Westmont. These villages provide essential services such as grocery stores, hospitals, schools and other vital infrastructure necessary for keeping our communities healthy and thriving year round.

Elk Grove was founded in 1854 by John A. Elk and his wife, Sarah. The Elm Grove School District was organized in 1904 and the town was incorporated on February 15, 1906.
