Elmhurst, IL is a city in DuPage County, Illinois. The population was 26,914 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in DuPage County by population and the second-largest city in Chicago. The name Elmhurst comes from two places: Elmhurst Hills and Elmhurst Park. The first gunsmiths to set up shop in what is now Elmhurst were Nicholas Flournoy and Ebenezer Morse. In 1833, a group of men from New York started a company that manufactured rifles and shotguns in Elk Grove Village, IL. They named their company "John Brown's Rifle & Gun Co." After John Brown was killed during the American Civil War, his rifle company became known as "Brown's Army". later it became part of Colt Firearms Company which still makes firearms today. In 1859, George Waring opened a gun store on State Street in Elmhurst with his son Charles Waring IIin partnership with John Hennepin (a cousin). At this time there were three gun stores inDuPage County - one operated by Hennepin & Co., one by Waring & Sons (the father and son team), and one by Valentinedestructive device gunsmiths Isaac Rice and Isaiah Dearborn who had opened a store called "Dearborn Arsenal" on State Street across the street from Hennepin & Sons. This last business did not open until after Abraham Lincoln was elected president because of riots taking place at armories throughout America following Lincoln's inauguration on March 4th 1865…. In 1871 Valentinedestructive device gunsmiths James Purdy Sr., James Purdy Jr., Arthur Godfrey established themselves at 515 N Clark St providing service to hotels throughout Chicagoland including the Excelsior Hotel where President Ulysses S Grant entertained visiting dignitaries on February 14th 1875….. On October 15th 1870 Samuel Morse founded "Samuel Morse Arms Company", which manufactured breechloading artillery weapons including cannons for military use…. Thereafter Emanuel Ziegler began importing small arms into North America starting with pistols then rifles before moving onto shotgun manufacture… In 1896 William Fenton founded an ammunition factory upon opening his plant at 6165 South Pulaski Road near West Dundee Avenue making shells for Winchester Repeating Arms Company.. He also developed new processes for manufacturing ammunition that made it possible for reloaders to produce multiple rounds per minute without having to break firearms into component parts…… By 1912 all but three of Fenton’s plants had been closed down due to World War I shortages………… In 1933 Benjamin Gitlin established “Benjamin Gitlin Ammunition Products Inc” producing ordnance hardware for both civilian and military purposes…………………….. Beginning in 1955 Sigarms Corporation began making handguns under license from Firearm Concepts Incorporated…………….. On December 12th of that year, Captain John Mott arrived with his family from Cincinnati and erected a log cabin on the same site where he now lives known as Fort Mott. In 1824, Reverend Elijah Hicks founded Emmanuel Baptist Church in Elmhurst which remains today one of the town's most important churches. In 1829-1830 Isaac Pabst established a grocery store near what is now Wojciechowskie Boulevard and Western Avenue which became the nucleus of what would become Elmhurst's heavy industry base over time including textiles (1905), machine shops (1911), aluminum smelters (1965), food processing plants (1986) - some still functioning -and Brewster Glass Company until its closure in 1985 by then Mayor Edward Jaffe's father-in-law Edward Beattie. In 1905-1906 two brothers by the name of Flory built a sawmill on State Street just northeast of present day Griggs Road; it continued operating until 1978 when it was taken down to make way for new development west of Route 606 including an elementary school, playgrounds for children living along Route 606 between Griggs Road and I-80/I-94 In 1911 Augustus Kelley started construction on what would become home base for Sears Roebuck & Co.; this eventually became Home Depot Incorporated with its corporate headquarters located there from 1984 through 2011 . The post office served Elmhurst until 1969 when it moved to nearby Crystal Lake . As early as 1895 local farmers had begun planting corn or other types of grain crops along routes running east/west through their area; these fields remain today closed off but neighboring agricultural land can be seen lying fallow around them due to lack of access or interest by landowners With industrialization came increased competition for jobs within miles radius; this led to increased migration away from rural areas into cities throughout Cook County starting with Elmhurst followed by other villages located south central Illinois such as Arlington Heights and Wheaton Migration rates peaked during World War II with more than 20% coming from rural backgrounds into Chicago ; however since then they have been slowly declining again although recent reports suggest that there may be some returningigrant families residing inside city limits

The first settler in Elmhurst was Elias Witherspoon and his family who arrived from England in 1810. They named their new land "Wetherspoonsville". The town started as just a group of small farms and villages around Wetherspoonsville, with only 8 people living there at the time. It didn't take long for Elmhurst to become a larger community with its own Post office, school system, fire department and churches. In 1834, John Atherton bought 1/4 mile (1 km) of swampy land north of present-day Elmhurst Avenue from Cornelius Vanderbilt for $2 per acre ($40), making him one of the earliest settlers in what would grow into Elmhurst. In 1835 he donated another tract to the city for use as public square. In 1881–82 two groups of immigrants – Irishmen and Germans – set out to found a village on this blockaded island in Lake Michigan called Sheboygan Falls after fallinging trees that had been cut down near their homes back home on Long Island Sound by American forces during the war for independence (Operation Neptune's Spear). Both groups were successfully assimilated into local society; however, German culture persisted faster than Irish culture and eventually organized itself as an independent settlement known as Sheboygan Falls which still exists today about three miles east of downtown Elmhurst on Higgins Road (). On January 16th 1870 James Jenssen became Mayor of Elmshires
