In 1865, the town incorporated and began to build its own courthouse and jail. The Elmhurst School District served the town until it merged with neighboring Park Ridge in 1957 to form the Chicagoland School District No. 1. In 2000, Elmhurst voters approved a measure that made it an unincorporated community within the new district- something that had been attempted before but never successful due to opposition from nearby Park Ridge residents (who wanted their own community). Today, Elmhurst is still considered an integral part of Chicagoland because it has more than 50 businesses located within its borders alone- making it one of the most active local communities in all of Cook County! Elmhurst is a small city in the U.S. state of Illinois, located on the north side of Chicago. As of 2010, Elmhurst had a population of 34,595. Elmhurst was founded in 1847 by James Hutton and his family as an agricultural community on the east bank of the Chicago River. The name Elmhurst is derived from a tree near the original town site and means "place where poplar trees grow." The first settlers in what is now Elmhurst were farmers who brought their crops to market from nearby Lake Michigan. By 1850, there were over 100 residents living in what is now Elmhurst. The town was originally built on land that was donated by Hutton's father-in-law, John Jarratt. In 1853, when Congress passed the Morrill Act providing for public land settlement in Illinois, Elmhurst became one of 168 towns and villages across the state to be established under this law; it was also one of eight communities affected by the opening of Cook County in October 1855. In 1860, local citizens voted to change the name from "Elmhurst" to "Hurst" after Representative George Hurst (R-Chicago). At first Hurst refused to allow his name to be used because he thought it would damage his political career; but after some public pressure he changed his mind and agreed to support the renamed townspeople. When Elmhurst incorporated as a village in 1881, it immediately faced opposition from neighboring Plainview because their village consisted only of agriculture with no industry or commercial opportunities available; however, withstood these challenges and rapidly grew into one of Chicagos most popular villages during its early years thanks largely to its excellent infrastructure - including two main streets (Main Street & Van Buren Street), churches/synagogues (Anglican & Jewish), schools (Public School #1 & Public School #2), fire department Headquarters (Baldwin House), parks (Lake Park & Mellon Park) - all built between 1882-1892 along with several other important municipal amenities such as water pumps and streetlights for downtown area illumination during late 19th century America's Great Awakening period: It wasn't until 1924 when Mayor John Puskar declared that all new construction within City limits must have an approved zoning plan which included residential development; this policy led eventually to vast suburban developments being constructed adjacent Toeppenkirchen Road over many decades culminating in today's extensive Bryn Mawr neighborhood just outside Ofc limits
Elmhurst was a small village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It was located on the east side of Elmhurst Road, between Elmhurst and Addison Streets. The population was 2,425 at the 2000 census. The Village of Elmhurst had been founded by John Dutton in 1853 as part of a larger settlement called Clear Lake. In 1871, it became an incorporated village under the name Elmhurst. The population grew rapidly during the early 20th century due to immigration from Hungary and other parts of Europe. In 1922, Elmhurst voted to become an open-air shopping center with two entrances and four floors covering . It opened on October 3rd, 1922 with a total sales budget of $1 million dollars. At its height, Elmhurst had over 100 stores including Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Ward stores as well as JCPenney and Macy's department stores. In 1924, Elmhurst lost its independence when it merged with nearby Addison Township to form Addison-Elmhurst Township. It remained an independent township until 2002 when it merged into Cook County government along with neighboring Arlington Heights to form the new county government of Cook County
