Frankfort, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 18,752 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Cook County and is one of the most populous cities in Illinois. At one time it was the fourth-largest city in Illinois. The first permanent settlers arrived in what is now Frankfort on March 15, 1817 from Kankakee County, Iowa. They were led by Captain John Floyd and his party of ten men. After landing they began to build a log cabin which served as their home for a year before being destroyed by a natural disaster. In 1824 the first post office was established at Frankfort with Elisha Swayne as its first director. A store and wagon road were built through town to serve residents nearby and mail was brought into town by boat or overland from Chicago via Rock Island Railroad until1874 when an express train service started running between Chicago and Frankfort providing daily service until 1966 when it ended due to budget cuts. The arrival of electricity made Frankfort possible to start manufacturing steel products during World War I; this led to increased business for local businesses such as Armour Aircraft Co., Tractor Supply Co., Jarden (later Quaker Oats) Coffee & Tea Company, Mid-Continent Mutual Insurance Company and National Cash Register Company among others which continue today as some of the largest employers in town today. In 1925 Mayor James Mallow appointed Wm Henson president of Armour Aircraft Corporation after watching him design an advanced fighter plane that became known as "the Starfighter". The day following President Henson's inauguration Armour Aircraft Corporation celebrated its 100th anniversary with a banquet at Town Hall attended by many mayors including Mayor Mallow himself who also presented Mr Henson with an honorary degree from DePauw University

Frankfort was founded in 1817 by the Illinois Company, a group of investors led by John Jacob Astor. The town grew quickly and soon became a center for fur trading and trade. In 1834, the Ohio Company bought the Illinois Company's shares, resulting in Frankfort becoming an Ohio tollgate. The town continued to grow and be one of the most important commercial and industrial centers in central Illinois. The early years of Frankfort were difficult as it was under constant attack from Native Americans. Attacks began in 1816 when Chief Sachem Mattawa attacked the town, killing six people and injuring many more. In 1824, another attack occurred when Chief Tecumseh attacked Frankfort and killed four people. However, these were only the beginning of attacks on Frankfort; during its early years there were periodic incursions from Native Americans that caused great damage and losses to the town. In 1830, local farmers began to plant cotton fields in what is now downtown Frankfort. This new development caused heavy demand for goods brought into town from outlying areas such as Decatur, Indiana; Louisville; Cincinnati; Cleveland; Akron; Erie County (now Allegheny County); and even Canada. As demand increased, so too did prices for goods sold within Frankfort limits. This created a huge market for goods produced within central Illinois but also made it very difficult for small businesses to compete against large companies with resources better devoted to other endeavors. However, despite these challenges,Frankfurt turned out to be an powerful engine of growth for central Illinois over time due to its strategic location at the nexus of several west-central states: Indiana (to the south), Ohio (to the east), Kentucky (to the north) and Michigan (to the west). Frankfurt's success resulted from two factors: first, its location—it was located on both sides of I-80/I-94 artery which linked all five states—made it easily accessible by traders and entrepreneurs who wanted access to valuable commodities sourced from all over America.; second, Frankfurt had developed a strong economy based on agriculture which supported approximately 10 percent of population while manufacturing accounted for 90 percent production."
