Freeport, Illinois is a small town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Freeport" comes from the French word for "safe haven." In 1871, an act of Congress provided for the establishment of a lighthouse and wharf on what is now Freeport's waterfront. The town was organized in 1892. The first store in Freeport was built by J.W. Latham and Averill Pritchard. Mr. Latham operated it until his death in 1888; Averill Pritchard continued to run it until 1895." In 1899, Samuel Morse opened a post office here under the name of Morseville (later renamed Freeport). At that time there were only two stores and four residences in Freeport." In 1902, Wm Capps opened a grocery store which became one of the largest Grocery stores west of the Mississippi River." In 1903, Harry Sells opened a flour mill here which became one of Illinois' leading flour mills." In 1905-1906 Geo Wirthlin ran a meatpacking company here which shipped high-quality beef to many countries around the world."" In 1907-1908 Judge John Neelyopened an insurance agencyhere which served Freeport residents for over fifty years."" At this time there were also several factories including Anheuser Busch beer plant (now closed)and National Steel Corporation's steel mill."" Freeport has experienced many changes during its history. In 1916 when World War I began, most people living within five miles (8 km)of Base Camp at DeKalb Army Base left to join up with their units overseas."" By 1939 most people living within five miles (8 km)of Base Camp had either moved away or returned home ""Most businesses had closed by 1945 although some still functioned such as Joes Radio Service located just off US Highway 14 across from Main Street"" Most manufacturing and trade have stopped leaving today due to economic reasons"" In addition very few people remain who are closely related to those who founded or continue operating businesses here"""
The modern airgun was first invented in 1892 by George Stephenson, who built the first practical air rifle. The first commercial firearms were pistols using gas-operated mechanisms, such as the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR), which were developed during World War I. By 1925, almost all handguns had been replaced by rifles and shotguns using breech-loading cartridges with propellant gases entering through a port in the barrel and expanding within the gunpowder magazine to create a round that was fired by pulling the trigger. While breech-loading firearms have been used for centuries for hunting small game and target shooting, they became more popular in the late 19th century as they became more efficient at penetrating armor and becoming self-loading. It was not until 1915 when a French scientist named Henri Sumner designed and patented an air pistol that allowed firing of rounds without having to reload. This weapon is now considered to be one of the most important inventions in airguns history. In 1923, John Browning introduced his new Model 1895 semi-automatic shotgun into competition at the International Exposition of Arms in Paris. The Model 1895 quickly became successful and saw widespread use throughout World War II; it remains one of the most common shotguns ever manufactured. In 1949, Winchester began producing their own version of the lever action rifle called simply “Winchester” because it bore little resemblance to any other firearm on earth outside of its simple design principles. This rifles success led to Winchester becoming one of America’s leading Firearms manufacturers from its inception until its acquisition by Remington Arms in 1998.

In 1912, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway (CPRR) acquired theFreeport & Moline Railroad. The CPRR renamed the railroad the Illinois Central Railroad. In 1948, the Illinois Central Railroad merged with the Pennsylvania Railroad to form Amtrak.
