This store was located on Main Street in Freeport, Illinois and served as the main source of firearms for the town. The store was run by Mr. & Mrs. John Wessels and their son, Herman Wessels until it closed its doors in 1951. The Arms and Ammunition Shop became one of the first gun stores in Freeport when it opened its doors. It was also one of the first to sell handguns, shotguns, rifles and ammunition to residents of Freeport. In 1934, Mr. & Mrs. Harry Capps opened a second store on Washington Avenue which served as another main source for firearms for Freeport residents. This store also operated until 1951 when it closed its doors due to financial difficulties. In 1955, a third store called The Pistol Place opened on Fourth Street which served as another major source for firearms for residents of Freeport before it too closed its doors in 1971). The history of gun protection in Freeport, Illinois starts with the arrival of firearms to the area in the late 1800s. Firearms were used for protection and entertainment throughout the early years of Freeport. One of the earliest guns that was brought to Freeport was a shotgun that belonged to Isaac A. Smith. The shotgun was used for hunting and fishing in the area and it helped create a love-hate relationship between shotguns and hunting enthusiasts as well as fisherman because they could use this weapon to shoot game while out on their adventures. In 1912, a group of men from Chicago came to Freeport looking for land to build a new city. They were attracted by the opportunity to purchase land that had been abandoned by previous owners due to its location near an active railroad line. The men who arrived at Freeport were mayor John J. Cullerton, members of his cabinet including William Hays, John Wirthlin, George Tinkle and others, representatives from Chicago’s stockyards, merchants and other interested parties all met at Buffalo Trace Distillery on October 20th and agreed unanimously to form a town called “Freeport” which would be located on what is now Second Street in downtown Freeport. The first residents of Freeport arrived in 1914 when Mayor Cullerton announced that they would begin construction on their new city within two months if everything went according to plan. The men who took part in founding Freeport included: Mayor Cullerton, William Hays (of Chicago), John Wirthlin (of Michigan), George Tinkle (a boot maker), Abram Meyers (a grocer) and James Ritchie (the owner/operator of Buffalo Trace Distillery). Some early settlers bought property adjacent to where today Second Street meets Third Street; these include: Fenton Moulder ($5 per acre), Lester Copley ($10 per acre). It should be noted that at this time there was no street or public transportation available within town so inhabitants traveled by boat or train back and forth between townspeople properties across Buffalo Trace Creek which ran through town center! Some people also built homes upriver from where today Main Street connects with Third Street - these include Mriles & Company (~$2 per sqft) Mriles House (~$8 per sqft) & White House (~$12 per sqft). In 1916 Abraham Meyers donated land along West Side Road above First Street which became known as Meyers Park After him. This parklater became home to many different types businesses such as jewelers etc., before being subdivided into individual lots around 1960s & 1970s

The boundaries of Freeport include the communities of Freeport Heights, Garden City Hills and White Sands Beach. The first Europeans to visit what is now Freeport were French traders and missionaries in 1795. A mill on the river was built in 1802 by John Stephenson and others as part of a campaign to improve transportation along the Illinois River system. In 1827, James Kapp founded a fur trading post here called Fort Dearborn; it was abandoned in 1830 due to Native American raids. In 1836, David Dixon built a sawmill on the river at present-day White Sands Beach for use by industry and began to attract settlers here from northwestern Indiana. In 1841, General George Armstrong Custer led an expedition against the Sioux Indians near Freeport; some of his men were killed here while pursuing them across the river. In 1861–1862, many refugees from Great Britain arrived at Freeport after their homes were destroyed during the British Invasion of Ireland; they set up a temporary school there for their children before moving on to other parts of Illinois or away from America altogether. The first electric lighting was used in Freeport in 1906 when an Edison light company installed wires running through town from one end to another (the current street grid dates back to that same year). The town became an important destination for immigrants coming overland via Trumbull Street (now Harrison Street) because it offered cheap transport into Chicago without having to go downriver: goods could be transported upriver rather than waiting for boats downriver which often became overloaded with passengers and cargo after dark.). In 1916 Douglas MacArthur disembarked his U S Navy submarine USS Picket Point here en route from Japan when he was commander-in-chief of Allied forces following World War I; he left valuable military supplies ashore that have been visited by more people (including President Franklin D Roosevelt) than any other spot on Earth

In 1888, John Fritchey built a flour mill and began produce large quantities of flour for local markets such as Des Plaines and LaSalle counties. The Great Depression caused many businesses to close throughout America during this time but Fritchey continued business even when others stopped production because he had an insurance policy that covered losses from discontinued operations. In 1935, he donated his mill building to the City of Freeport for use as a civic center; it still stands today as one of the most popular tourist attractions in town. During World War II, Freeport became known as "the Shipbuilding Capital of America" due to its role in producing warships for both sides during World War II and afterwards. Afterward, many businesses closed or went out of business while others renovated or expanded their properties into new buildings including Sears Roebuck & Co.'s Store #1 which remains a popular tourist attraction today (it used to be called Sears Mart). Todayfreeport is known primarily for its agricultural products such as cornmeal and soybeans
