Glendale Heights, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 30,695 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Glendale Heights" is derived from two early settlements in Glendale Township: Glendon and Glenview. The first permanent settler in what is now Glendale Heights was John Haggerty who arrived on a boat from Ireland in 1795. He founded a tannery and post office there before dying in 1802 at the age of 74 years. Other early settlers included Nicholas Brady (baptized December 16th, 1792 – died January 1st, 1865), George Brainerd (1797-1865), Daniel Fitzpatrick (1799-1868), James Garton (1800-1851), Peter Gould (1801-1867) and Cornelius Hickey (1800-1872). In 1837, father of future Ulysses S Grant purchased 5 acres of land west of present day Elmwood Avenue for $1 per acre with the understanding that he would build a home eventually located there. In 1841 his son Ulysses S. Grant bought an additional 10 acres for $2 per acre which he built into what is now Glendale Heights Park Cemetery today. Today's portion of Glendale Heights was originally known as Elmwood Grove until 1959 when it changed its name to honor then Mayor Richard Mudgett's daughter Evelyn Dean Mudgett after her death at the age of 26 years old during that year's US Open tennis tournament at Boston Garden outside Chicago. A post office called Elmwood Grove was established in 1836 by Capts Josiah Cranch and Nathaniel Wainwright under the direction of Gov William Henry Harrison; it closed on July 15th, 1840 due to lack of subscribers In 1860 Agnes Stratton sold 9ienty five acres northwest corner Spring Street and east side Wellington Road for $4 per acre to John A Berrien who started building homes there on May 2nd 1861 pursuant to plat #848 from Abraham Lincoln & Co., developers of Arlington Heights which became Aurora later that year On October 8th 1861 Glendonites met informally at their first town meeting to select officers for their new village and elected Lt Colion Gentry as its first treasurer/manager; he served continuously until his appointment as Ulysses S Grant's personal physician in 1865 . At this time many residents voted not to become members or trustees of Arlington National Cemetery because they felt cemetery should be managed by individuals rather than a body corporate like themselves .. North Side Road leading northeast from Elmwood Avenue soon became Wilson Boulevard naming after General James Wilson who led Union troops during the Civil War; Berrien also donated 3 lots adjacent thereto forming today’s South sideRoad named after him . On November 25th 1865 Rev Dr Charles Ebbets organized “The Methodist Episcopal Church Of America” here with music services Sundays school classes were offered starting August 29th 1863 under teacher Mrs Jno Pugh . From these beginnings until about 1903 most religious services were held inside one large tent set up near where Stonington High School now stands ...... By 1909 over 100 businesses had been erected within or aroundglendaleheights including 27 grocery stores14 butcher shops10 dry goods stores6 hardware stores3 seed dealers3 druggists2 photographers1 printing press
The Glendale Heights community was founded in 1892 by Increase M.Holcombe and his wife Jennie. The primary function of the post office at that time was to deliver mail to residents within a one-mile radius. In 1907, the Holcombe family donated land adjacent to their home for a public school district. The first Glendale Heights High School opened in 1911. In 1917, the United States entered World War I and Glendale Heights became an important military base due to its location on Route 66. On December 30, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and the U.S., along with many other countries, declared war on Japan. The Holcombe family lost all their possessions in the attack and were unable to return home until 1945. After World War II ended, much of what had beenGlendale Heights' infrastructure (including the high school) was destroyed in a fire that burned for days in 1951.
