In 1849, responsibility for providing water for Chicago was given to a board composed of landowners around town; this board decided that there should be an oath administered at each public watering place swearing not to sell or lease water rights until better times arrived for private owners such as themselves. This oath became known as "The Highland Park Promise." In 1860, President Abraham Lincoln made Highland Park one of five towns withinChicago over which he had direct control based on his promise made during his campaigns for office regarding municipal self-government (see also Lincoln County). On July 4th 1860 with only three residents registered – Mrs.(Ann) Fenton( aged 55), Mr.(George S.) Gorman( aged 21), Miss Jane Aiken(aged 8) – they marked Independence Day by erecting a flagpole outside their house colony (later renamed Gorman House). From this location they watched American flags fly every day except July 4th so that everyone knew their town belonged to America! This event helped start what would become known as "the park" movement throughout Chicagoland - citizens banded together advocating for parks and open space developments within their communities - something that still flourishes today! On October 3rd 1870 Samuel Morse sent his first transmission using telegraph wires from his lab inside Armour Square into downtown Chicago through Jackson Boulevard; this event came about due to efforts by Senators Nicholas Murray Butler (D-IL) & Charles Evans Hughes (D-IL) who were both interested in sending messages across state lines without having them intercepted! In 1836, John Hennepin purchased land northeast of present-day Highland Park from NicholasTOSTMAN for $1,000 (). In 1865 Andrew Johnson moved his family from Maryland into new land which he had purchased southwest of downtown Chicago along Milwaukee Street between Randolph Street and State Street where they founded Mount Olivet Presbyterian Church (). Reverend John Aiken soon followed suit with his own church built on propertynow eastern edge of present day Highland Park just off Midway Boulevard ().). By 1870 there were over 100 churches within a radius of one mile (1 km) of downtownChicago (). By 1880 there were over 1,500 businesses located within one mile (1 km) of downtownChicago (). On December 25thof 1886 two young men named William McKinneyand Horace Mann founders First National Bank Of Chicago (). With Horace Mann leadingthe bank's first loan transaction (), First National became Northwestern American Banksystemsnd Trust Company (); today it remains one of Chicagos largest commercial banks with branches throughout Chicagos metropolitan area ()". In 1893William Jennings Bryan made unsuccessful bids for election as President of America () and lost to Grover Cleveland (), but he did become Governor Of Illinois () before losing again to Cleveland in 1896(). On July 12th 1897 African American Isaac Asbury established Social Hall (), also known as Booker T Washington Jr.'s Mosque or Tuskegee Institute (), on North Side Boulevard between West Side Highway/Racine Avenue and Devon Avenue (). This black religious center provided social services such as Clothing For All classes open To All children (), meal program for low income families,, medical care for poor patients etc., which helped improve community stability early on during this period when many African Americans experienced racism towards their demographic groupings()). In 1865, the Illinois General Assembly created Highland Park Township and named it for the highest mountain range in the state. It was one of two townships in the county, along with Centralia. Highland Park was developed primarily as a citrus orchards and fruit farm. The first citrus crop grown in Highland Park was oranges in 1922. The township's first school was built in 1923 on what is now Illinois Route 36. A second school, which served children from eastern side of town until 1957, was built on acres east of U Street near the intersection of Chicago Avenue and I-94. In 1951, Highland Park became one of six townships to be dissolved into Cook County when all but three were combined into the newly formed city of Chicago. Highland Park remains an unincorporated community today.
