Highland Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 792 at the 2010 census. Highland Park is located on the banks of the Des Plaines River and is northeast of Chicago. It was named after Scottish highlanders who had settled in what is now north suburban Chicago in the 1840s. The first settlers were political refugees from Ireland who left to escape persecution there during the Potato Famine of 1845-1849. They founded a small community on land that would eventually become Highland Park. The Irish immigrants brought with them their Gaelic-based culture and language which blended well with the largely white American pioneer population. By 1850, most of these Scots had moved away and their successors began developing Highland Park as an agricultural center with large acreages for growing crops such as maize, wheat, potatoes, apples, and dairy products. The city's early years were difficult because transportation was limited by distance and lack of roads. However, thanks to strong leadership from Mayor John Jumper (1914-1920) and City Council Member Harry Laughlin (1920-1924), Highland Park grew rapidly through development of its own public works department and investments inroads into nearby towns such as Elgin Heights and Cicero. In 1922, construction began on what would become one of Chicago's earliest expressways – State Street/Highland Park Road – making Highland Park one of its most developed areas within commuting distance for residents across town or outside the city limits. Today, much like when it first came into being over 150 years ago, Highland Park remains an vibrant community full of opportunities for growth both physical and digital; providing economic stability while fostering social covenanting across generations through sport events (eagle hunting tournaments are popular among young people), arts programming (the park features a variety of performing arts venues including three theaters), hiking trails/paths throughout downtown streetscape beloved by many families during summertime evenings; engaging in cultural experiences year round whether visiting art galleries or experiencing traditional Scottish festivals; hosting annual events such as ice cream Socials at local businesses or Fourth Of July BBQs at various parks throughout town
