On November 10th (the day after Election Day), General Order No 1 was issued by Ulysses S Grant ordering all white men over 16 years old must leave allIndian reservations within 20 days or be arrested and held without bond pending trial on charges of treason against the United States government . This order caused many Native Americans in Illinois to flee their homes as they were not allowed to property owning white men without due process or trial The order also resulted in numerous businesses being closed including several banks which made themselves wealthy by selling their stock before it could be confiscated By this time most residents had either fled or been forced out by federal troops A few families remained but soon faced other challenges such as fish farming becoming very successful while diamond mining stopped because transportation costs became prohibitively expensive There are still some descendants living today on five Indian reservations located outside Highland Park

The area was then called "Nokia" after the great chief of the Potawatomi tribe, and it was here that a smallpox epidemic struck in 1819. By 1830, there were over 100 settlers living in Highland Park. The town began to grow rapidly due to its strategic location and its access to water supplies. In 1835, the first school was built in Highland Park and the first post office opened in 1840. The town continued to grow and by 1850, there were over 300 residents living in Highland Park. In 1924, Highland Park merged with neighboring village of Maywood into one municipality which still exists today as an independent community.
