A small group of English colonists arrived in 1814 and started trading with the local Native Americans along the Great Lakes region before being expelled by them in 1818 after series of raids across much of central Illinois. The first white settlers arrived via stagecoach from Peoria to form a community called Grayslake on November 1, 1820, about two miles east of present-day Jacksonville Landing. The name was changed to Jacksonville in 1830 when it became an Caleb Porter town site due to his ownership of land around what is now downtown Jacksonville Landing (then known as Old Fort Caroline). In 1835 over 10 families decided to move from Grayslake to what would become Jacksonville Landing due to its attractive location on Big Creek and good soil quality for growing crops; they founded what would become known as First National Bank (later Jaxon National Bank). In 1859 Union troops burned down portions of Grayslake during their attack against Confederate forces under General Robert Eichelberger while General David Butler was leading an advance through southern Illinois towards St Louis; this event led to the Battle of Mobile Bay where Union forces defeated Confederate Generals John Pemberton and James Longstreet under heavy casualties and destroyed most major fortifications within sight of Savannah, Georgia which opened up Mississippi River commerce for Indian traders seeking goods unavailable downriver at Mobile Bay. This event helped increase American influence throughout southern Illinois includingDuPage County which thereafter became known as “Jacksonville Township” or simply “Jacksonville” after General Butler’s headquarters
