Kapp named this new communityJacksonville after John Jacob Astor'sprominent fur trader and partner in developing American commerce along the Great Lakes region

The town quickly became a center for trade with farmers along the river and with farmers living near Lake Michigan. By 1830, there were 400 businesses in Jacksonville employing over 2,200 people. In 1838, Jacksonville earned its first Academy Award when actors Fanny Hill and Edwin Booth starred in anProduction Of "Hamlet". In 1847, Mayor James Peele built the first courthouse in town which still stands today; he also helped found Trinity Episcopal Church (now Sts Peter & Paul Cathedral). In 1853–54, Jefferson Davis traveled through Illinois during his presidential campaign and stopped at Jacksonville on his way back to Springfield Junction where he discussed plans with General George Sells concerning military operations against Mexico City during the Mexican WarSimpson used this stop to build up support among local citizens for Davis while trying to win over some important political opponents whom he hoped would support him instead

Jacksonville was founded in 1794 by Captain James K. Polk and the following year became a part of the United States of America. The city experienced its peak during the American Civil War, when it had a population of over 150,000 people. After the war, Jacksonville declined and only regained its status as a small town until the late 1800s. In 1907, Jacksonville was renamed for General Andrew Jackson after he became president of the United States.
