Kankakee is a city in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Kankakee was founded by Native Americans on November 5, 1826 as Kankakee Point on the Fox River. The name means "place where you can see the water." The first settler in what is now Kankakee was Joel Butters who arrived in 1830. He and his family built a log cabin on the west side of the river near present day Kankakee Avenue and Randolph Street. Two years later, he married Sarah Wigglesworth and they moved to their current location on North Main Street in 1833. In 1836, General David Dixon attacked and burned buildings in McHenry County while seeking revenge for an attack that had taken place two months earlier at Lexington Court House in Moline by Colonel Abraham Lincoln's forces under Lieutenant John Pope. Dixon's men burned most of Kankakee before withdrawing to Fort Dearborn with what supplies they could carry. Dixon's raiders returned to Kankakee Point late one night in December 1836 and found 23 residents living inside their logs building which had been unoccupied for days because no one dared leave for fear of being looted again. One resident who escaped reported that "the savages set upon us with such force that we were forced into our Log-House & killed all but three of us; these three we tookprisoners until morning when they got away." In 1840, Isaac VanBuren became President of the United States after winning a presidential election against James Buchanan via majority vote from both houses of Congress where he served as Vice President under Andrew Johnson from 1865 to his inauguration as president on January 20th 1865 based off four years service as lieutenant governor of Illinois (1853-1860). After VanBuren's term ended he ran for office again but lost this time to Abraham Lincoln who would be reelected twice more (1868-1876) before becoming Ulysses S Grant during his final term as president (1881–1889). In 1890–91 Vandalia Ransom purchased land east of present day Kankakee from DeWitt Clinton for $5,000 which she named “Belle Isle” after her sister Belle Isley whom she did not know existed at that time. This area included parts of what are now Northwestern Indiana and Northwestern Illinois today including Peoria Township . Ransom developed it into one of Chicago’s richest neighbourhoods with large homes designed by Italianate architects like Edward Burnham and George Biddle Cummings.. From 1903 onward it also included much smaller lots adjoining Belle Isle making up Belmont Park today.. In 1912 when Chicago annexed northern McHenry County making Kankakee part of its boundaries it also annexed Belle Isle extending its boundary southward past Racine Heights onto northwesterly Superior Road creating Kane Parkland within its limits today... By 1920 Kane Parkland consisted largelyof small lots surrounding Belle Isle park which beganto change hands frequently between developers seeking higher property values or private individuals seeking access to open space.. When Cook County was created within Chicago’s boundaries following Prohibition this area became knownas “Kane Park” due to numerous businesses located there including Armour Millinery company founded there by Amos Gage along with other Manufacturing plants associated with prohibition such as Winton Furniture Company International Headquarters among many others... Finally annexation by Cook County completedin 1950 changed allthatagainwithBelleIsleyparkrepresentedbyalargegarden comprising hundredsofsmall parcelsjoinedtogether around an informal pond popularlyknownastheIsland). TodayKankeepark enjoys extensive visitor traffic including several amusement parks located adjacentincludingSouthParkandNorthwellington Fieldsand several athletic fields containing NHL arenas usedbyChicago Blackhawks , Cubs baseball teams etc.).
The village of Kankakee was founded in 1836 by members of the Illinois Company, a group of Indiana farmers who had come to the area to prospect for land. The company's first store and post office were located in what is now the town square. In 1840, the company purchased 5,000 acres (20 km2) of land east of Kankakee from John Nicholson, who had been living on the property since 1799. The new proprietors built a small community called West Point on the new land and began to invite settlers to arrive and live there. By 1847, about 50 people lived in Kankakee. In 1849, three men from Ohio named James Wm. Cook set out from Indianapolis to explore Indian Territory. Cook became lost while trying to find his way back home and eventually died in Iowa; his companions never found their way back alive. This event is often cited as the start of Wisconsin English settlement in Indian Territory. After Cook's death, his friends decided to name their new settlement after him: Cookstown (now Waukegan). Kankakee grew rapidly during the 1850s due to its location at the crossroads between two important wagon trails: one going north through Illinois into Canada and another going south through Missouri into Texas and Mexico City. In 1857, Kankakee voted unanimously to become an independent village with its own government. The following year, it elected its first mayor, George Stephenson; this position was held by a board of trustees until 1865 when Mayor Richard J. Yates took over full responsibility for City Hall. During World War I (1914-18), Kankakee joined other American villages within USDA Forest Service District 3A near St Louis County in support of military efforts against German forces occupying France during World War I. Kankakee also played an important role in later years as an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and large population Of these years production averaged more than 2 million bushels (100 kg) per crop
