In 1868, Kewanee was founded by Quakers who were looking for a place to grow their crops and establish a new community. The town quickly became known for its firearms manufacturing industry, which supplied the United States with rifles, pistols, shotguns and other firearms accessories. The industry continued to thrive until the early 1960s when it fell victim to health concerns and the introduction of more reliable and affordable ammunition. In recent decades, however, gun manufacturers have returned to Kewanee and continue to produce quality products that can be purchased online or at local stores.

The first firearm shirt was developed in Kewanee, Illinois in 1881. The shirt was made to commemorate the founding of the town by a group of local farmers.

Kewanee, Illinois is an unincorporated community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 696 at the 2010 census. Kewanee is located at (41.660928, -87.787392). The first settler in what is now Kewanee was Jameson Roach who arrived there on November 1, 1814. Roach's family name came from a place called "Keele" near Yorktown Heights in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. In 1835, John and Nancy McNaught bought of land that included present-day Kewanee from the Weldon brothers for $8 per acre. They named their new village after General David Porter's home state of Maine where he had been raised and served as a colonel during the Mexican–American War. The McNaught sisters taught school nearby until about 1865 when they moved to Pittsfield to take over the teaching position at Vassar College which President Abraham Lincoln had founded as a girls' college in 1858 with money he had won in a legal action against Andrew Johnson's former Vice President John Cranch. In 1865, Mrs. McNaught became president of Vassar College when her husband died suddenly while still its chancellor; she served until his death in 1893. John Hickey immigrated to America from Ireland about 1840 and started farming about two miles east of present-day Kewanee on the shore of Sangamon River just north of Griggs Road on what is now State Highway 161A (now US Highways 31 and 5). Hickey named his farm "Keele", after his ancestral home townland thereabouts some twelve miles west of Dublin town center on the Shannon Peninsula near Ennis Junction on Irish sea coast but several kilometers offshore from modern-day Cork city Limits along both banks of navigable river Shannon Estuary between those islands today known as Clare Island and Rockall Light Isles or Rathlin Isle today part of Kerry county mainland between those island groups; such parish then lay within ancient County Cork boundaries probably adjoining modern Limerick Harbour tonight also opposite modern Portmagee harbour although latter body lying some Channel Long ago Shoreline Lighthouse Keeper said 1768 British Navy ship HMS Hull landed here July 29th day anterior Royal Navy vessel HMS Norwood anchored offshore early August same year Accurate Map dated 1798 by Captain Richard Mittenour docked here Friday Harbor Master Alfred Gibbs who resided then & Now ashore Nearby & Captured by American Ship SS Constitution Aug 28 1798 one day before Battleof Lake Erie off Behalf Of Great Britain Ulysses S Grant later Commandership'Ships History Book says: " nearly halfway between these 2 points lies [the] small Island called Rathlin Isle which has been detached lately by storms CESAR WILSON Private Secretary to Govt.") Kewanee, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,948 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Kewanee was founded on May 8, 1839 by John Denton and his family as a small settlement on the east side of the Chicago River. The first post office in Kewanee opened in 1840. By 1850, the town had developed into a busy agricultural center with two mills and several thousand residents. In 1865, Kewanee became an independent city when it merged with neighboring Waukegan. On July 1, 1969, Kewanee incorporated as a village. The name "Kewanee" comes from Potawatomi language word "kewanawa," meaning "place where corn grows." The history of Kewanee is rich and full of both positive and negative experiences that have shaped its character and culture today. One important event that has shaped KewanEE's identity is the battle between General Andrew Johnson's forces and General Ulysses S. Grant's Union Army during the American Civil War located just outside of town along what is now State Route 57 (known as Cottage Grove Road). This battle helped to spur development within what would become known as Soldier Field in downtown Chicago; also known for being home to many high-profile events such asthe Super Bowl XVI game played there in 1967 between Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers During World War II much of what now makes up downtown was demolished to make way for military housingroxyons which eventually morphed into what we know today as First Methodist Church Complex on North Michigan Avenue near State Street across from Fordham University In 1957 local businessmen Richard Mabey (founder/manager of Indianapolis Colts football team)and Bob Costello (owner/manager of Ameritrade baseball team) Purchased 1400 acres (5 km2) south of town along present day Interstate 90 for $3 million Mabey named his new community after his friend Ethridge Keyes Washington who fought under Ulysses S Grant during the war while also serving as ambassador to Russia under President Abraham Lincoln Washington died before he could be given proper Recognition so keyes farm was renamed Ethridge Keyes Farm which still stands today

Kewanee was founded in 1836 by John Stephenson and his family. The town had a population of only 205 people when it was first established, but by 1867 it had grown to 1,500 residents. Kewanee became an important manufacturing center for the area, and until the early 1920s it was one of the largest cities in Illinois. In 1925, Kewanee was annexed by Chicago, and its population has since decreased significantly.
