Libertyville is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is bordered by the towns of Westchester on its north side, Willingboro to the east, and Streamwood to the south. The town was founded in 1837 by General David Dixon as Dixon's Settlement on a tract of land that had been bought from John Lennon after his followers were massacred near Warsaw in 1835. The name Libertyville was chosen because it was one year before Illinois became a state and one day after its admission into the Union. The first post office opened in 1840. In 1870, David Haughton donated land for a public school system which became known as Haughton High School. In 1922, he donated another piece of property for what would become North Chicago High School; today it is home to Northwestern University's McCormick School of Business Administration. On July 1, 1871, Libertyville became an incorporated village when it split from Dixon's Settlement along with two other villages (Westchester and Willingboro) within Cook County due to lack of support from the high commissioner for village affairs Isaac Sennett. At this time there were only 769 residents in Libertyville Township with a total population of 2229 people living in 907 buildings or “houses” spread over an area measuring just 0.10 square miles (). Of these 769 residents: 554 (72%) lived within 2 blocks of their homes while 107 (14%) resided further than 10 blocks away; all but three residences were built prior to 1830 (). In 1912-1913 four businesses – Eager general store (founded 1865), blacksmith shop (1887), livery stable (1892), and feed store(1900) – merged into one business called Cement Company; this company still exists as Cement Trust Company located at 12 Wacker Drive according to their website . In 1913-1915 two more businesses merged – Stagecoach Lines & Expressions(founded 1902) and Western Electric Railway Company(founded 1906). In 1925-1926 four more businesses merged into two companies called Consolidated Grain Elevators Incorporated & Grain Terminal Merchants Association Incorporated: International Harvester Co.(founder 1916), Jardine Rubber Co.(founder 1920), Hudsons Bay Woolen Mill(founder 1901)), Eastern Railroad #1&Eastern Railroad #2( founders 1907-1908) On December 20th 1926 both companies went bankrupt and dissolved making way for what would be LibertyVILLE'S FIRST BUSINESS DISTRICT! This district included all of downtown with 41 stores/cafes/restaurants/barbecues/grocery stores plus six banks! Each business district generated an estimated $8 million annually during its peak years! Today most if not all these districts are long gone or have been replaced by new shopping malls or office buildings

Libertyville is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Libertyville was founded in 1837 by James K. Polk and his wife Sarah Oakley Polk. It is the second-oldest incorporated city in Illinois and the third-oldest city east of the Mississippi River. The area that now comprises Libertyville was first settled by Native Americans, who were hunter-gatherers until they were displaced by European settlers in the 17th century. In 1837, James K. Polk and his wife Sarah Oakley Polk founded what is today Libertyville on land donated to them by Elijah Hicks and others from nearby Clearfield Township. According to legend, when Mrs. Polk saw an alligator swimming near her home she ordered her husband to shoot it as a warning to other settlers not to come any closer; he did so and named the alligator "Liberty". In 1854, local merchants formed a company with the goal of building a canal through present day Lucas Valley but never achieved success due to lack of funds. In 1865, they built what became known as 'The Canal Company'. This company produced flour for local mills until 1923 when it closed down due to economic collapse in Illinois during World War I (the war led to an increase in demand for flour). In 1902, many residents of Chicago moved into eastern Cook County amid increasing urbanization; thisShift created new business opportunities for entrepreneurs such as John Witherspoon who built a grocery store on Weed Road adjacent to The Canals department store (later JCPenney). In 1907, voters passed an ordinance establishingicity within town limits which allowed citizens of neighboring towns - which had formerly been part of Libertyville - access to municipal services provided within their own borders without having their taxes levied on those same services provided within LibertyVILLE itself
