In 1858, Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States and named a judge on the Illinois Supreme Court. He decided to run for office as a Republican and faced off against incumbent James Buchanan. The two men had different philosophies on firearms, but they both agreed to run an election campaign with pistols instead of rifles. Lincoln won by a wide margin, thanks in part to his support for gun rights. His victory set the tone for future elections which would see other U.S. presidents also take up arms in order to protect their citizens from tyranny. In 1865, after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which ended slavery in all Southern states except Arkansas and Texas. One of the most famous t-shirts associated with Lincoln is "1858: The Year Of Guns." This shirt features a photo of Abe holding a rifle while standing beside his friend John Wilkes Booth who assassinated President James Buchanan in April 1858
