Lincolnwood was founded by Daniel Drake and his wife Rebecca on October 16, 1847 as a tiny community named "New Hope." It had a population of only 10 people. Lincolnwood grew quickly, and by 1850 it had 180 residents. In 1853 the first post office was established in Lincolnwood. By 1860 it had 1,000 residents. In 1861 Abraham Lincoln served as Mayor of Lincolnwood and donated land to become the city park which still exists today. The city's first fire department was organized in 1865; it has served continuously ever since. The town's first school opened in 1868; it is still operating today as Griggs Middle School/High School. In 1870 the first machine shop was built; it continues to operate today as American Machine Works (AMW). In 1879 Lincolnton Township was formed from part of Cook County and became an independent municipality with its own government; this led to the nickname "Lincolnwoods" being given to much of Cook County outside of Chicago proper until that time. In 1902 Gurney-Howe Electric Railway began operations through town; this led to further growth and development within the town boundaries over ensuing years with numerous businesses opening up along Route 22 including Ford Motor Company (FORD), KFC restaurants (KFC/Kentucky Fried Chicken), Sears Roebuck & Co.'s flagship store (Sears) - which closed down in 2003 - JCPenney (JCPenney), Subway sandwich shops (Subway/Neiman Marcus) - which closed down 1984-1988 - Dunkin' Donuts - which opened for business in 1980 - Applebee's restaurant chainFast casual dining restaurant chains such as TGIF(TGIF stands for "To Go", meaning you can go get your food later) Denny's reproductions of old fashioned diners like those found around North Side high schools such as Roosevelt High School have also been open throughout history making downtown Chicago feel like a small village again
Lincolnwood was once a small town on the east side of Chicago. It had a population of about 2,000 people in the early 1900s. However, by the late 1920s, Lincolnwood had lost most of its residents to moving to larger towns and cities in Illinois or Wisconsin. In the 1930s, Lincolnwood was renamed after President Abraham Lincoln.
