Machesney Park is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. It lies just west of the city of Chicago on the north side of the Chicago River. The population was 8,822 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Machesney Park was John Machin who arrived from England in 1836. He built a cabin on an island in the river and named it Machin Island after himself. AfterMachin died, his wife married Nicholas De Witt and they moved to Machesney Park together in 1853. They raised two children there and operated a store until their deaths in 1907 and 1912 respectively. In 1911, John Pritzker bought land east of Machesney Park from Nicholas De Witt for $10,000. Pritzker funded construction of a new courthouse and jail which were completed in 1914. In 1916 he donated land to the City of Chicago for use as parkland which became Machesney Park today. Machin Island still remains one of only a few remaining locations where early settlers had their own dock to boat over to get to Machin Island for supplies or fishing during times when navigation was difficult or impossible within reach of shorelines farther upstream or downstream

Machesney Park is a small town in Illini County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Machesney Park was Nicholas Mughal in 1837. He and his family built a log cabin on a bend in the Kankakee River. In 1838, John Fenton bought land near Machesney Park from Nicholas Mughal and moved his family there. The Fenton family had six children: John (1839-1907), Anna (1841-1925), Rebecca (1843-1921), Rachel (1845-1926), Edwin (1847-1900). In 1840, German immigrant Johann Gottlieb Kaufmann moved to Machesney Park and started a farm with his wife Magdalena Bader and their teenage son Friedrich Wilhelm Kaufmann Jr.. Kaufmann owned about of land in present day Machesney Park. From this farm grew the town of Machesney Park which began to take form on December 12th, 1846 when Peter Jenssen purchased two hundred acres from Kaufmann for $500 cash only. Jenssen renamed it "Macheney" after President James Kapp's brother Andrew MacLean Mackenzie who had settled near Ottawa County, Illinois some years earlier. On October 12th of that year, Jenssen donated all of his holdings east of State Street to become part of what would become known as "Macheney Park". Kaufman’s daughter Emmaline married Jacob Riis who also founded what became downtown Chicago’s first grocery store – La Folie – on Wabash Avenue in 1886 making it one of the earliest shopping areas in North America A mill built by August Lagerwey on the stream below Genesee Street began operations in 1851 and became one of early industry located within what would eventually be called "MacheNEY PARK". By 1870 over twenty businesses were located within ½ mile radius including stores such as Sears & Roebuck & Company and Harriman’s Grocery Co.; post office; school; restaurant; Masonic Lodge #2; Stoneware Workshops Ltd.; lumberyard; blacksmith shop; sawmill; gristmill; copper mine etc., making it one of largest towns west of the Mississippi River before its incorporation into city limits by ordinance on November 6th 1871 under new name "Chicago Heights". In 1916 Armour Manufacturing Company merged with General Electric Company creating perhaps one among most dramatic transformations during twentieth century American industrialization resulting not just in creation or growth but also midtown's earliest skyscraper antennas being erected atopEyeWitness Tower
