Machesney Park, Illinois is home to one of the most interesting and important gun hammer history in the United States. The Gun Hammer Museum was founded in 1963 by Professor emeritus Albrecht E. Gunther and Dr. Stanley J. Ladd, both scientists at UIUC. Today, the museum has over 150 guns with hammers from all over the world on display, as well as a library that contains many books about gun hammer history. The Gun Hammer Museum’s collection began with three guns: an eighteenth century muzzleloader known as the “Pit Bull” and two pistols from 1827-28 that were used to shoot balls through a hoop into a firing chamber at Fort Dearborn in Chicago; these firearms were part of the National Firearms Collection (NFC) until they were donated to UIUC in 1961. In 1964, UIUC acquired two other muzzleloaders – one from east Tennessee and one from west Texas – which helped round out the NFC’s holdings for Machesney Park handguns (as well as those of several other museums across America). Hammer guns became increasingly popular starting in World War II as they allowed soldiers to carry more weapons without having to worry about losing their pistol's magazine or other accessories. Hammerguns were also useful in law enforcement due to their simplicity compared to other firearms such as pistols which required multiple fingers (or even ten) to operate whereashammer guns can be operated just by one finger

Machesney Park is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Machesney Park was incorporated on November 3, 1871. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Machesney Park was James Fenton who arrived in 1836 and platted the small community of West Side platting which included present day Machesney Park and parts of Worthville Township. On January 8, 1861, Machesney Park was organized as a township with a total population of six residents. In 1865 it became Anoka Township when that county was created from Van Buren and McHenry counties following the Kansas–Nebraska Act. In 1871, Kansawas were brought over by Minnesota farmers to work on their new farmsteads in Kane County near what is now Peoria Heights Cemetery. With the arrival of these immigrants came new ideas about life – one idea being to create townships so people could live close together while still maintaining their independence or control over their own lives and commerce (in those days there wasn't much transportation available between towns). The land for Machersney Park had been purchased from John Atherton by Nathan Webb after he acquired it from his father-in-law David Hennepin in1862 for $1 per acre – making it one of the earliest communities to be platted in Kane County! On November 3rd, 1871, Machesney Park became an official town when its incorporation petition was accepted by the board of directors at its meeting held at First Presbyterian Church located on Main Street (now Northwest Highway). The first mayor and council were: Wm. Ewart Healey (president), Geo O’Donnell (vice president), Jno Czajkowski (treasurer), Martin McCarthy (sexton) & Wm Greenough (builder). A post office called "Macheney" had been established in 1870 but changed its name to "Machseys" in 1872 due to confusion with Macha Point Light Station on Mackenzie River just south of present day Chicago's Navy Pier! In 1886 the post office moved east across State Line Road into what is now Winnetka Village leaving behind "Macheney." By 1902 all mail destined for Appleton went through Peoria instead! What followed during this time were some major changes for Machesville including construction of streets/the opening up of fields for farming which gave birth to today’s neighborhoods such as Fox Lawn Extension along Northwest Highway as well as schools like Independence School District No 11 which opened its doors on September 9th 1907 on North Third Street! Many homes built during this time are still standing today including Lenox Hill Estates home #2114PPQ; Griggs House #4644HG; Maccabee House #5671GFWK; Eagle Glen Estates home #7237LXD; etc… We can only imagine how busy our Streets Department must have been back then!!
