In Marion, Illinois, the first firearms were made in 1836. The area was then part of the Indiana Territory and at that time, gun owners had to keep their weapons in their homes. In 1843, a ordinance was passed that allowed for carrying guns on public streets. This law later changed to allow open carry of firearms in Marion after a man named James Butler was shot and killed with a rifle by two men while walking his dog.

The town was first settled by Italian Americans in 1836. In 1870, a post office and store were established in Marion; it became a village in 1907. Marion, Ill. is an historic town in Kane County, Illinois that was founded in 1836. The population was 9,864 at the 2010 census. Marion is located on the banks of the Des Plaines River and is a gateway to the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Marion was James Tisdale who arrived about 1836. He built a small cabin on what is now State Road 590A which became known as "Tisdale's Landing". The name derived from Tisdale's discovery of a new route overland to Chicago from the east coast via land he owned near modern-day East Stroudsburg, PA. In 1840, John Lumsden and his family moved to Marion and took up residence in a log cabin on Old State Road 590A (now School Street). They were followed by Elijah Norris who established himself as an early farmer in this area around 1845. By 1860, there were 17 settlers living in Marion Township with one store and four homes. On November 3, 1856, voters elected John McNamara as their first township treasurer after he had served since May 1st of that year. On December 8th of that year they also elected Fayette Ewing as their first justice of the peace for Marion Township 2 years following his election to office on November 7th of that year; both men were unopposed during this term because no other candidates sought election at this time due to lack of nominations or interest from those residing within the township limits. It wasn't until 1861 when it was decided by vote of the township committee that a school should be constructed within its boundaries according to plans submitted by David Haines who then served as teacher for two years before moving onto other duties at school #1 where he taught until 1870 when he retired after 38 years teaching students grades K-12 across all grades levels including Prekindergarten through 12th Grade! In 1870 alone David Haines served three terms consecutively as trustee/school superintendent with longest tenure being 11 years! It wasn't until 1909 when incumbent John McNamara announced his retirement effective June 30th due to health concerns which led to contested elections resulting in Justiceship between future Mayor William Jorgensen (1909-1913) and Fred Rauch (1913-1920) who won handily defeating rival Nancie Wright (1920-1924). This would be only one such instance where voting irregularities occurred during Knute Rockne's governorship leading ultimately to Partisan politics behind closed doors in Springfield throughout much OF Illinois government becoming increasingly polarized along partisan lines during this era often making it difficult for outsiders looking into local government decisions & operations!! Prior thereto many independents (& even some Democrats!) had served entirety or most parthips within various village halls & councils over these last several decades prior totalling nearly 100 individuals serving continuously thruout Cook County statewide!!!
