Marion, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The early history of Marion dates back to 1813 when the site that became Marion was first settled by loyalist refugees from Ratliff County, Texas. The community name may be derived from one of the many French words meaning "happy," "satisfied," or "pleasant." In 1835, James Kline founded Kline's Mills here and it quickly became a leading center for cotton textiles and other manufacturing activities in the region. In 1860, John Denny founded Denny's Mill on the present day site of downtown Marion. Denny had arrived in this area as an agent for J.P. Morgan & Company and soon began expanding his business into various industries including flouring cattle and managing forests near his mill sites. By 1870, Denny had become one of the largest landowners in Kane County and he donated land to build what would become today's downtown Marion square including Riverfront Park which remains a popular tourist destination today. One significant event during this time period was when Abraham Lincoln visited Marion on November 4th, 1860 while he was campaigning for election as Ulysses S Grant’s Vice President (the first African American to serve fulltime in such an important role). After meeting with local citizens and inspecting the local mills thereabouts, Lincoln praised their efforts – particularly those at Kline’s Mill – before departing for Chicago to continue hiscampaign trail that week. This visit marked a turning point for both men as they entered into political careers; Lincoln would be nominated by Congress two years later after being elected governor of Illinois while Grant went on to serve as Ulysses S Grant’s second term as President of the United States (1865-1869). A few years later on October 9th 1870 Missourians under General Forrest captured Knoxville which led to astock market crash that year known as Black Sunday all throughout Northwestern America due largely to speculative investments made by speculators seekingaea new opportunity in rapidly collapsing economies caused by overproduction following World War I
