Matteson, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 137,031 at the 2010 census. Matteson is the county seat of Cook County. The city is located on the north side of Chicago and includes portions of the communities of Maywood to the east and Lombard to the west. The City of Matteson was organized on March 4, 1892 from parts of Lombard and Maywood. In 1907 it annexed part of its neighboring town, Westmont, making Matteson one municipality with a total population exceeding 20000 in both cases. It gained city status on October 1st 1912 when it annexed part of Downers Grove to the north. On December 15th 1934, Matteson lost its independent charter and became a member borough within Chicago's limits under an annexation agreement with Archer Heights which had been created mainly as an attempt by Mayor John Dunne to gain more political power within his own ward while remaining outside of Cook County politics. On November 3rd 1951 voters approved annexation into Chicago by referendum after Dunne made what he called "a last ditch effort" to keep Matteson separate from downtownChicago due to concerns about potential flooding problems caused by rising water levels in Lake Michigan caused by heavy snowpocalypses during that year's winter storm season - a problem which would continue up until Hurricane Katrina slams into New Orleans twenty years later). After much wrangling between city officials and Archer Heights residents over annexation rates (which were ultimately set at 1% for each community), Matteson officially became part of Chicago on January 1st 1959 under a system similar to that used for other municipalities which have since become full-fledged memberships within their respective cities: first received letters notifying them of their incorporationdate but no vote was required; then meeting with City Councilors responsible for membership assignments; finally ratifying annexation using only written submissions from residents who were living in their new home prior to incorporation date

The city of Chicago and its suburbs are adjacent to Matteson. The first settler in Matteson was George Hargrave who came to the area in 1836. In 1853 John Fenton built a cabin on the site of present day Matteson Elementary School. By 1860 there were 10 settlers living in what is now Matteson Township including Fenton and his family. A post office was established at Matteson in 1861 and remained open until it was discontinued on November 15, 1886. In 1865 James Ladd opened a store at 501 State Street which became one of the largest general stores in Illinois . Ladd also operated a tannery for about 25 years before closing it down around 1915 because of competition from eastern tanneries . A hotel called the Park Hotel first opened its doors in 1911 at 319 North Dearborn Avenue with rooms above an extensive grocery store which continued to be operated by Mrs . J .P . Smith until her death in 1984; after she sold it to developer David Stern he added an arena and several other buildings making it one of the most complex hotels ever constructed west of White Castle Boulevard A new elementary school named after Drury Lane (now Savion) opened its doors on September 14, 1924 as part of a $2 million construction project funded by bond issues that had been passed through three successive legislatures since 1916-17 including Governor Charles Evans Hughes' administration On October 1st 1925 local resident Art Ramsay donated land near current day Wacker Drive for use as a park followed by development that started with two homes being purchased from Harry Wexler for $100 each on December 3rd 1928 bringing total number of residents to 26 just prior to World War II when demand for housing led some residents to leave for more lucrative opportunities elsewhere within Cook County
