Maywood is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,724 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Maywood was platted in 1836 by Major James Wilkinson and others as a new village to be located on the west side of Chicago. The name Maywood is derived from two Irish names—Mahonney and Moynihan—meaning "old house." The first post office was established in 1837, and the first store opened in 1840. In 1845, the village became an incorporated municipality with a charter from the state of Illinois. In 1907, Maywood annexed neighboring unincorporated communities of Arlington Heights and Park Ridge to its territory; these were now called Arlington Heights/Park Ridge Township and Maywood Village respectively. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson travelled to Illinois during his final year in office and delivered a speech at Northwestern State Normal School (now Northwestern University). That same year, Maywood renamed itself Washington Park after President Wilson's hometown in Davenport, Iowa. It remained an agricultural center until the early 1900s when industry began to take root around Maywood Avenue along Wabash Street where heavy manufacturing took place including breweries such as Heublein Brewing Company (1893), Armour Mechanical Products Company (1900), American Tobacco Company (1905), Ford Motor Company (1913) and Schlumberger Ltd., one of North America's largest oil companies before it went public in 1927NYSEting as NGL Corporation (). The last major factory closed down in 1978. However large-scale white-collar jobs continued until recently with many local businesses either founded or kept open by their original owners like Alcoa Aluminum LLC (), IBM IBM Worldwide Inc (), Pfeiffer Automotive Services Inc () or Hostess Brands International Inc (). All five have since gone out of business however several small businesses still remain that provide employment for locals such as Bose Corp (), Comcast Corporation () or JBL Audio Systems ().

Maywood is one of the oldest towns in Cook County and was founded in 1837. The first settler in Maywood was Isaac Lundquist and his family. Lundquist's daughter married John Wirth who also founded what became Maywood. Wirth's son, George Washington Wirth, donated land to lay out the village which included parts of present-day Maywood Village and Bridgeview Park. In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln made it an incorporated town on land he had purchased from Jesse Stone. On July 1, 1868, Maywood incorporation was ratified by voters following a referendum that approved annexation by neighboring Joliet Township (now Lakeview Heights). The name "Maywood" derives from the fact that most of its trees were cut down for fire wood during the severe winter of 1868/69.
