At that time, the area was a rural outpost of about 350 people. The first gunsmith in town was John Young and his shop was located on the southwest corner of Second Avenue and Third Street. In 1839, James Wesson opened a store at Fourth and Elm Streets which became one of the largest handgun dealers in America. In 1846, General Samuel J. Butler traveled to Maywood to inspect an armory under construction on Elk Street. He allowed local citizens to vote on whether they wanted guns or not, which led to the founding of the Maywood Rifle Club in 1848. That year also saw the opening of a post office at Fourth and Elm Streets. In 1850, Amos Kendall opened a grocery store at Seventh and Elm Streets which became one ofMaywood's most important businesses until it closed in 1861 due to political unrest during the American Civil War. In 1865, Isaac Newton opened an ammunition store at Eighth and Dearborn Streets which later became known as Newton's Armory (now part of Barnes & Noble). That year also saw the birth ofMaywood’s only newspaper - The Republican - which continued publication until 1919 when it was replaced by The Daily Review/Union-American . From 1865-1911, there were 24 businesses operating within 500 feet of each other in downtown Maywood where firearms were sold both openly and undercover (the latter referred to as “the black market”). Additionally, between 1865-1896 there was an armory constructed on State Street near First Avenue that served as home base for many local arms dealers including: Wesson’s Armory; Young & Wesson (later Beckel Bros.), Newton’s Armoury (now part of Sears Holding Corporation), Kendall’s Grocery Store(later occupied by JCPenney), Purnell Firearms Company (later absorbed into Colt Inc.), Carpenter Arms Manufacturing Company (later absorbed into Remington Arms), Bissell Firearms Company(now renamed Bushmaster Firearms Corp.), Sinclair Gun Shop(later occupied by Dick Smith) among others . The last gunsmith operations closed their doors permanently around 1911 due to stricter regulations from government officials following World War I . However , several remnants such asWesson’s Armory still remain open today with occasional special events taking place inside their building like silent auction events or Airsoft shootings
